1862 – Bahadur Shah Zafar (Bahadur Shah II) was the last Mughal emperor.
1923 – Ashwini Kumar Dutta was an educationist, philanthropist, social reformer, and patriot from Bengal.
1947 – Kothandarama Natesa Iyer (S. K. Natesa Iyer) was a Sri Lankan journalist, trade union leader, and politician of Tamil origin, who pioneered the labour movement in the plantations in the early 1930s.
1978 – Jivraj Narayan Mehta was a politician and the 1st CM of Gujarat. He served as the first “Dewan” of the erstwhile Baroda state, and Indian high commissioner to the UK between 1963 and 1966.
2000 – Chidambaram Subramaniam, was a politician and Independence activist who served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Defence in the union cabinet. He also later served as the Governor of Maharashtra.
2000 – Tara Cherian was a social activist and politician. She was the first woman mayor of the Madras city. She was also awarded the Padma Bhusan in 1967 by the Government of India.
2006 – Pahlan Ratanji “Polly” Umrigar was a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Bombay and Gujarat. He also played Test cricket in the Indian cricket team as a middle-order batsman. He captained the Indian team in 8 Test matches between 1955 and 1958.
2015 – Bappaditya Bandopadhyay was a director and poet.
2016 – Jayawantiben Mehta was a politician who entered politics in 1962. She was elected as municipal councillor of the BMC  in 1968. She was later re-elected and served as the municipal councillor for 10 years straight.
