1983 World Cup Final – On 25th June 1983, India played its first world cup final match against the unbeatable West Indies. India had 183 runs in 54.4 overs in the final match. The score made by Indian players was not big for the strong rival team, but still, India managed to win the 1983 world cup! After defeating England by 6 wickets in the semi-final, India reached the final match against West Indies. The team was captained by Kapil Dev. Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, Balwinder Sandhu, Madan Lal, and Krishnamachari Srikkanth were the other main team players in the Indian team.

West Indies were looking to bag the title to make it their third consecutive World Cup win in the final.
On the same Lord’s England field, they won the World Cup championships in 1975 and 1979. They had beaten Pakistan in the semi-final by 8 wickets and went on to play their third final against India. The West Indies team was captained by Clive Lloyd. Gordon Greenidge, Viv Richards, Joel Garner, and Andy Roberts were other key players.

In the 1983 World Cup Final, West Indies won the toss and invited India to bat first. Indian players were all out at the score of 183 runs in 54.4 overs. However, the West Indies team got all out by scoring only 140 runs in the match.

Hence, India won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, making history!

1983 World Cup Final: Match Details

Due to his batting and bowling efforts, Mohinder Amarnath received the man of the match award. He had scored 26 runs, the third-highest total in the final, and grabbed 3 important wickets through his excellent bowling performance.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath, scored the highest for the team, by contributing 38 and 26 runs respectively. Sandeep Patil, being a bowler, had scored another highest for the team by scoring 27 runs.

On the bowling side, Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath took 3 wickets each. Kapil Dev as the lead bowler and the captain of the team had maintained pressure on West Indies players.

West Indies had an easy target to chase but lost an early wicket of Gordon Greenidge. The team reached beyond 50 with Desmond Hayes and Viv Richard’s batting. However, Madan Lal took them both out. West Indies stood at 66 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Jeff Dujon and Malcolm Marshall set out a partnership for 43 runs but were out by the team scoring 124 runs. At 140, the team was all out!

India reached the final and won the title under the great guidance of Captain, Kapil Dev. He was the lead bowler on the team. In the crucial match against the West Indies, he batted, but he only managed to score 15 runs while facing 8 bowls. However, he smashed three boundaries in the match.
Kapil Dev had performed well through his fast-medium bowls. He threw 11 overs and gave 21 runs. He had managed to maintain pressure on the rival team through his magnificent bowling skills. He had taken a critical wicket of Andy Roberts.
