26 January 2022 Republic Day Tableau List – As India gears up to celebrate its 73rd Republic Day this year on 26th January, an uproar and political controversy over the issue of tableau can be sensed already. India celebrates its Republic Day each year to mark the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect. And on this day, India became a republic and democratic nation, thereby, putting an end to the Government of India Act of 1935. Each year, Republic Day parades are held at Rajpath street in Delhi, the preparations of which begin earlier. However, owing to the COVID restrictions, the parade will be witnessed live by only a limited number of people.

How is a tableau selected?
An expert committee consisting of eminent and distinguished personalities in the field of arts, painting, sculpture, architecture, and many more reviews the proposals that are sent by the states and the Union governments. The expert committee and the selection of the tableau for Republic Day is usually decided by the Ministry of Defence.

Each year, states and Union Territories send their proposal over to the expert committee responsible for selecting the tableaux and based on the proposals received, the expert committee looks at various aspects, such as theme, concept, the visual impact of the tableau, its design, appeal, and many more similar things.

The controversy around Tableau
Just days before the Central government and the Ministry of Defence are set to announce all the tableaux that are shortlisted for this year, controversy has now come to the surface. The proposals of the West Bengal government, Tamil Nadu, and the Kerala government have been rejected. The states have now come out and sought the intervention of Prime Minister Modi. The Ministry of Defence and the expert committee are all set to release the tableau list on 21st January this year. However, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin that the tableaux were selected based on the prescribed set of guidelines.

A total of 12 tableaux have been selected by the Ministry of Defence and the expert committee. However, the full names are yet to be released by the designated committee. However, it is being reported that Delhi and Telangana’s tableaux might not be a part of this year’s R-day parade.

The Republic Day parade 2022 will have 17 military bands, 16 marching contingents, and 25 tableaux of various states, departments, and the armed forces. The details were announced by the Indian Army on January 22, 2022, in a statement. Notably, the states selected for the Republic Day parade tableaux also include the poll-bound states- Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and Punjab.
The Uttar Pradesh tableaux during the Republic Day parade will highlight the Kashi Vishwanath Dham temple as well as the State Government’s One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. On the other hand, Uttarakhand tableaux will focus on the State Development schemes while the tableau from Goa will highlight the symbols of Goan heritage.
