2nd Test Match Ashes 2019 Highlights – It was a four-day test match which Australia and England drew at Lords yesterday. The hosts batted extremely well on the last day of this 2nd test match. Ben Stokes scored his 2nd test hundred at Lords which allowed England to save the game.

Earlier Australia was bundled out for 250 runs, eight short of England’s first innings score. Jofra Archer made a memorable debut at Lords. His hostile bowling ensured that England was alive in the game. He injured Steve Smith in the first innings and later Archer was right on the mark to do the same with Marnus Labuschagne.

But, these two players fought well even after they got injured. Their gusty attitudes were the highlights of this match.

England was invited to bat first on day 2 of the test match. Day 1 of the 2nd test was washed out due to the consistent rains. Even the toss was delayed on the first day. On the second day, the hosts batted first but the start was not a good one again. Jason Roy fell on a golden duck after he faced the first 3 balls of Josh Hazlewood.

The top was blown away just like their lone test match against Ireland, at the same venue some weeks ago. Skipper Joe Root continued his poor form in this series and was the second one to be dismissed for just 14 runs. After the fall of 2 quick wickets, Joe Denly and Rory Burns steadied the innings with a partnership which was much needed for the hosts. Denly and Burns shared a partnership of 66 runs which kept them in the game. Burns looked good and so did Denly. England wanted this to go long but Denly departed after he scoring 30 runs. He yet again failed to convert the start.

England was in a spot of bother but, they still had Rory Burns at the crease. After Denly’s departure, Burns and Buttler batted for a decent amount of time. They took England to their 100 run mark. England kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rory Burns batted well and in the process, went past his 50 runs personal milestone. He was the one who held the innings together. But, he also couldn’t convert that 50 run score into a big hundred. He was out after scoring 53 runs. Then came in Jos Buttler who continued his poor form and was cheaply out yet again. Buttler scored just 12 runs to his name. Ben Stokes also followed Buttler and was out for a low score of 6 runs only.

Johnny Bairstow found some form in this test match. After the quick wickets, Bairstow and Woakes rebuilt the innings for England. They both took England above the 200 run mark. Woakes and Bairstow shared a partnership of 74 runs but Woakes too couldn’t convert the start like most of his teammates. Chris Woakes was out for 32 runs. It was Johnny Bairstow who took England to the 250 run mark. Bairstow scored a valuable half-century for his team and stood tall for England as the lower order didn’t fire.

After Woakes was out, Archer, Board, and Leach were also out cheaply and that too in quick succession. It was a handy knock from Bairstow which took England above the 250 run mark. Johnny Bairstow scored 52 runs and was the last man to be dismissed. Due to his efforts, England scored 258 runs in their 1st innings.

All the Aussies bowlers bowled well once again. They were right on the mark and yet again were successful in picking up wickets at regular intervals. All the bowlers chipped for the visitors and their collective efforts allowed them to bundle out England for a low score. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon took 3 wickets each to their name while Peter Siddle took 1.

Australia’s first innings didn’t go as well as they wanted. They expected some runs from their openers but, Warner and Bancroft failed again and disappointed their team. Warner was out in the 4th over and managed to score just 3 runs to his name. Bancroft spent some more time at the crease. He and Khawaja together took Australia to the fifty run mark. But, Bancroft couldn’t score more than 13 runs and in the next over Khawaja was also dismissed for 36 runs.

Australia was again in a spot of bother when Steve Smith came into the crease. He bailed out Australia once again but didn’t get much support from the other end this time. Travis Head was dismissed cheaply and Mathew Wade took Australia to the 100 run mark but he too didn’t stay for long. Wade was out for just 6 runs.

Skipper Time Paine provided some support to Steve Smith but at the same time, Smith got a nasty blow on the neck. He was down and out from the field for some time. Then, Peter Siddle and Pat Cummins served for Australia. Siddle couldn’t do as much as he did in the first test match. He faced 31 balls and was finally dismissed for 9 runs.

Then came in Steve Smith, who wanted to complete his 4th back to back century in the Ashes test series and that too in England. He hit some lusty blows to Chris Woakes but didn’t look as comfortable as he was before the blow from Archer. Smith was dismissed when he was just 8 runs short of a hundred and was out at 92 runs.

Australia reached the 250 run mark with Nathan Lyon to be the last man to be out. The Aussies scored 250 runs in their 1st innings.

England was also good with the ball. They kept Australia below their 1st innings score and succeeded in picking up wickets at regular intervals. Jofra Archer had a dream debut in test cricket. He bowled hostile spells and almost scared the best batsmen in the world. He picked up 2 wickets to his name. Stuart Board picked up 4 wickets, Chris Woakes picked up 3 while Jack Leach picked up 1.

England started their 2nd innings in the same old way. Jason Roy fell early again after a score of just 2 runs and Joe Root was also dismissed in the same over for a golden duck. England had a poor start and then Joe Denly and Rory Burns snitched a partnership just like their first innings. They shared a stand of 55 runs which took England above the 64 run mark. This time again, Denly was out after he got the start. He was brilliantly caught by Peter Siddle on his own bowling for 26 runs.

Then Rory Burns was dismissed for 28 runs. He couldn’t hold these innings as he did in the first one. England was in deep trouble as they lost 4 wickets with only 71 runs on the scoreboard. Buttler and Stokes batted on day 4 and ensured that the home side doesn’t lose any more wickets.

On the last day, Buttler and Stokes continued from where they left off on day 4. Stokes went all the way to score his 2nd hundred at lords while Buttler couldn’t manage to score a fifty to his name. He was out after he scored 31 runs. Stokes and Bairstow counter-attacked the Australian bowlers and took the lead after scoring more than 260 runs. Stokes and Bairstow shared an unbeaten partnership of 97 runs which came from 84 balls. This partnership ensured that England would not lose from here. The hosts scored 258 runs in their 2nd innings.

The Aussies missed some chances which proved costly for them. They also dropped Ben Stokes early in the innings and paid the heavy price for it. They still bowled well in tandem. Pat Cummins took 3 wickets while Peter Siddle took 2.

The Aussies had to survive to save this match, that too, without Steve Smith. Smith was ruled out of the second innings due to the blow on his neck by Archer. The top 3 still didn’t fire when it was needed the most out of them. Warner, Bancroft and Khawaja were out in quick succession and that gave England the hope of a miracle. Australia was about to miss Steve Smith but his replacement, Marnus Labuschagne stood tall even when Archer bowled him another bouncer which hit his neck.

Marnus Labuschagne responded that well. He scored a gutsy half-century and shared a much-needed partnership of 85 runs with Travis Head and kept Australia in the game. But things turned when  Marnus Labuschagne was given out wrongly. Joe Root took a diving catch of Marnus Labuschagne for 59 runs. The replay showed an angle where the ball touched the ground and another where Root’s fingers were under the ball. The third umpire should have given the benefit of the doubt to the batsman as he also wasn’t sure of the dismissal. But, he didn’t do that and that was the end of a good inning from Marnus Labuschagne.

Australia lost two more wickets and the match went in the thrilling part of the last hour. Wade and Paine were out cheaply. But Travis Head was still there with Pat Cummins. Australia could save the test match. They scored 154 runs from 47.3 overs in their 2nd innings.

England tried to force a win but that wasn’t to be. The last hour was filled with thrill because of Jofra Archer and Jack Leach. They both picked up 3 wickets each to their names.

Australia is still 1-0 up in the 5 match test series. Ben Stokes was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ for his unbeaten century.
