Women’s T20 Cricket Commonwealth Games

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be taking place in England from 27th July to 7th August 2022. This is going to be an event with nearly 4,500 athletes competing in almost 18 different sports.

A joint bid to include the women’s T20 cricket in the commonwealth games was recently placed by the International Cricket Council (ICC)and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This bid by the ICC and ECB resulted in the successful inclusion of the Women’s T20 Cricket at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. This inclusion was confirmed by the CGF – Commonwealth Games Federation.

Cricket will be returning in the Commonwealth Games after 21 long years. It was last played in the commonwealth games in 1998 in Kuala Lampur. There are going to be 8 international teams competing across the eight-match days. This game will take place in the Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

This inclusion of Women’s T20 in the Commonwealth Games will help in supporting the global growth of the women’s game. More young girls and ladies will get inspired to play and will get to play with a purpose to rise and shine.

Coming to the responsibilities, ICC will be taking lead in preparing the competition terms. They will also be in charge of maintaining the conduct of the game by providing match officials who will ensure that the matches are played as per the laws of the game. The Commonwealth Games Federation and Birmingham 2022 will take responsibility to deliver the sports event, Commonwealth Games 2022.

The President of the CGF, Dame Louise Martin DBE said that it has been a historic day and that they were delighted to welcome cricket back in the Commonwealth Games.

The Chief Executive of ICC, Manu Sawhney and the Cheif Executive Officer at ECB, Tom Harrison are both gratified about the inclusion of Women’s T20 in the commonwealth games. Both of them believe that this event will represent the biggest female and para-sport program in the history of Commonwealth Games. For them, this inclusion has landmarked this announcement as the brightest future for women’s cricket in the World.
