Abu Salem sentenced to Life Term in Mumbai Blasts 1993 case

 

A special TADA Court has awarded Life Term to Abu Salem in connection with 1993 Mumbai Bomb Blasts case. Life Term has also been given to another convict Karimullah, who has also been slapped with a fine of Rs.2 Lakh. 

 

TADA court has also convicted Tahir Merchant and Firoz Khan to death sentence and Riyaz Siddiqui to 10 years jail term. The sixth convict Mustafa Dossa had died on June 28.

 

Abu Salem was accused of transporting weapons from Gujarat to Mumbai. He had also given AK-56 rifle and some other weapons to Sanjay Dutt, who was accused in the case for the illegal possession of them. On the run for along time, Abu Salem was arrested and extradited from Portugal in 2005. As per the extradition treaty with the European nation, death penalty cannot be awarded to him.

 

In the Mumbai Bomb Blasts case, in which 257 people were killed and 700 injured over a series of blasts, the court had convicted six people in June this year. The blasts were carried on in Mumbai on March 12, 1993. The attacks were reported to be planned by India’s ‘most wanted’ fugitive Dawood Ibrahim.
