With a place in the Indian cricket team beckoning him at first owing to his skills in the longest format of the game, Ajinkya Rahane has over time gone on to expanding his stroke play to accommodate it to the ODI and T20 format as well. Making his foray into the Indian cricketing fraternity in 2007 with a place in Mumbai’s Ranji side, Rahane’s second season in India’s domestic tournament saw him amass 1,089 runs making him one of the main reasons for an unprecedented 38th title for the city.
With his side’s regular captain Smith being banned for a year, Rahane was given the prestigious opportunity of leading the Rajasthan Royals franchise in the Indian Premier League. For the IPL 2020 season, he was bought over by the Delhi Capitals in November 2019. He was retained for the IPL 2021 season as well.

Early life
- Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane was born in Ashwin Khurd in Ahmednagar District in Maharashtra on June 6, 1988. Born in a family of five people, Rahane is the eldest of his two siblings consisting of a younger brother and sister.
- Taken to a cricketing institute at the age of 7 by his father, Rahane took an affinity to the game from an early stage itself and found himself representing both the U15 and U19 Indian teams.

- Rahane was first noticed by the selectors when he scored two centuries during India’s U19’s visit to New Zealand in early 2007. The series was a major step for him to be selected for further tournaments, the first major one coming in the Mohammad Nissar Trophy.
- In his first match of that particular series, Rahane scored a massive 143, followed up by two centuries against the England Lions in the same year which earned him a berth in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy.

- Excelling in the Ranji format, Rahane scored a huge 1,089 runs in his second season for Mumbai which helped Mumbai move towards their charge for a colossal 38th title. His rich form in the domestic circuit saw him pile on 1,000 runs for two consecutive seasons, which included a high score of 265 against Hyderabad in the 2009-10 season.
- Taking notice of his excelling ways in the Ranji Trophy, Rahane was called up to the Indian side for the first time in a T20 match against England in which he went onto making a half-century. Ensuring that, he played his first ODI match in the country in which he consistently scored runs for the country.
- However, Rahane failed to live up to the faith reposed in him in the series that followed against West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and England. His lapses in form and turmoil touch with the bat delayed his first test match by almost 16 months.

- Rahane’s big moment in cricket came in 2017 when in March Virat Kohli missed out due to an injury. Rahane led the team as India’s 33rd Test Captain and won the low-scoring match with contributions in both innings.
- Rahane’s beleaguered touch touched new lows in 2017 and 2018 when he failed to capitalize on the continuous starts given to him. He scored a mere 17 in 5 innings in the Test series against Sri Lanka and was dropped from the first two Tests against South Africa in 2018.
- He was named the captain of the Rajasthan Royals outfit in the IPL in the 2018 season and continues to lead in 2019 as well despite the return of Smith to the side.
- Rahane was bought over by Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2020 season but was retained for the IPL 2021 season as well.

- Received the ‘M. A. Chidambaram Trophy for best U19 Cricketer’ in 2006-07.
- He is the 5th batsman to have scored a century in both the innings of a test match.
