The Month of Shravan is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is popularly known as Sawan. It is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar which is also considered to be the Holiest Month of the year. As per Vedic astrology, when the sun enters the Zodiac Leo, Shravan maas is said to set in and as per lunar calendar it is set on full moon day (Purnima).

Each Monday of the Shravan is known as Sawan Somwar and is considered highly auspicious for fasting. Many devotees observe fasting all the 5 Mondays, which includes a visit to the temple in the morning, eating only fruits & liquids during the day and supper/dinner to be taken without salt.

People engage in activities that pleases Lord Shiva during the month. For example, Rudra Abhishek and Homa: Performing the Rudra Abhishek includes the offering Milk, Panchamrit (mix of sugar, honey, milk, curd & ghee).

Chant Mantras like Om Namah Shivay, MahamrityunjayaMantra, Rudram Chamakam

Fasting on Every Monday

Wearing spiritual items like Rudraksha, amethyst mala, rings, lockets, a bracelet that are spiritually related to Lord Shiva.

Performing Poojas like Mangala Gauri Pooja, Mahamritunjaya Pooja,  Yagna Pooja, etc.

Offering Bel & Bel leaves, Datura, flowers on Shivlinga.

Offering sweets like Rice Pudding on the Shivalinga.

All Tuesdays in Shravan month are dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva.

Apart from Mondays, some more days are of importance during Sawan like Naga Panchami, Shravani Purnima, Raksha Bandhan and Govatsa.

It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva during the month of Shravan brings blessings from Lord Shiva. It is also considered that unmarried girls who keep fasts on all Mondays of Shravan get a good husband like Lord Shiva. The first Monday of Sawan2019 is starting from 17th July 2016.
