  • The total weight of the Chandrayaan-2 is 3,857 kgs and the total cost is approximately US$141 million.
  • India’s first moon lander and rover mission ‘Chandrayaan-2’ was planned and developed by the ISRO, in Bengaluru.
  • Originally, Chandryaan-2 was scheduled to be launched in 2011 and was expected to carry Russian-made lander. When Russia pulled out, ISRO had to develop its own lander and rover and hence the project was delayed.

  • The main objective of Chandryaan-2 is to map the location and abundance of lunar water. The mission will also study lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance.
  • The studies show that the South Polar Region has craters that are extremely cold and everything here is frozen thus the fossil of these craters can reveal some information about the early Solar System.
  • Chandrayaan-2 will also do 3D mapping of the topography of the South Polar Region and will calculate its seismic activity.

  • The GSLV Mk-III was used to launch Chandrayaan 2. It is the most powerful rocket ever developed by ISRO. It was initially named as Fat Boy, which was later changed to Bahubali.

  • The mission is the first Indian tour to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface and explore lunar terrain with native technology.

  • The Vikram lander will detach from the orbiter and descend to a lunar orbit of 30 km using its 800 N liquid main engines. Once the lander is detached it will perform a comprehensive check of all its onboard systems before landing and will perform scientific activities for almost 15 days.
  • Pragyan will move on 6 wheels at the rate of 1 cm per second, performing the chemical analysis and sending the data to the lander, which will relay it to the Earth station.
  • ISRO has selected eight scientific instruments for the orbiter, four for the lander, and two for the rover.
