Architect and design of Ram temple in Ayodhya – The architect of the grand Ram Mandir, Chandrakant Sompura from Gujarat comes from a family of temple architects that have designed more than 200 temple structures not only in India but in various other countries. Among various other works, Chandrakant Sompura has designed Akshardham at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Shri Akshar Purshottam Swaminarayan Temple in London which has entered into the Guinness Book of World Records, 108 Bhaktivihar in Singapore. Temples in India are usually designed in Dravidian style (this style is mostly seen in the South) and Nagar style (used in North Indian temples). In Northern India, the Sompuras are involved in designing temples in Nagar style. Amongst the Sompura families, the family of Padmashree Prabhashankarbhai Oghadbhai is one of the leading practitioners of Nagar shaily in temple designing. Chandrakant Sompura is the grandson of Prabhashankar who had re-designed and revived the Somnath Temple, Gujarat.

Till now, the family of Chandrakant Sompura has designed over 131 temples which includes some world famous temples like Krishna Janmsthan in Matura, Swaminarayan mandir in Mumbai, Sun Temple in Gwalior, Ambaji Mata Mandir in Ambaji, A.P. Temple in London, Sarva Dharma Temple in Bangkok, North America Hindu Union Temple in Pittsburgh, USA, Shiv temple in Singapore, few Jain temples in various states of USA, etc.

Introducing you to the design details of Ram temple in Ayodhya:

  • On being approached by VHP chief Ashok Singhal, Chandrakant Sompura prepared the first map of Ram temple in 1987. The design was approved by saints during the Allahabad Kumbh Mela in 1990s.
  • Chandrakant Sompura stated that the proposed Ram temple in Ayodhya will be almost double the size of the design proposed in the Supreme Court verdict last year.
  • Sompura added that the temple will be constructed in Nagara style of architecture and will have five domes.
  • The main structure of the temple will be 270 feet long, 145 feet wide and 141 feet high, largely prevalent in the western part of the country.
  • The temple complex will encompass an area of 57 acres.
  • The sanctum sanctorum of the temple will be huge with a dimension of 20 feet by 20 feet.
  • The temple will have three floors, making it almost twice the size of the original layout.
  • There will be approx. 360 pillars in the entire temple structure which will cover an area of 10 acres.
  • All the buildings in the temple town will be painted yellow to replicate the period in which Ramayana was set.
  • The Ram Mandir will stand on a foundation of more than 2 lakh bricks which will have Shri Ram inscribed on them.
  • Chandrakant Sompura stated that the special pink stones from Bansi Paharpur in Rajasthan will be used for the temple.
  • 1.25 lakh cubic feet of stone has been carved and 1.75 lakh cubic feet of sandstone will be required for the complete construction of Ram temple.
  • According to Ashish, son of Chandrakant Sompura, this is the biggest project in his family for 15 generations.

First part – This will be the front part of the temple.

Second part- This will be the door of the temple, which will be called Singhadwar.

Third part- Two pavilions will be built in this part.

Fourth part- This part will have a dance pavilion coming in from the temple.

Fifth part- This will be the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.
