Ashes 2019 4th Test Match Highlights – A classic test match was played at Old Trafford, both the teams were too close to each other in the contest between bat and the ball. But it was again Australia who clinched the 4th test match and lead the series 2-1.

After the close game lost by Australia at Leeds, the Aussies came back strongly as Steve Smith played another gem of a knock after the top order was blown away by the England bowlers. Smith who missed the Headingly test came back and scored a double ton in the innings which propelled the visitors to score a mammoth score in their 1st innings and in the 2nd innings too, Smith saved Australia from collapse. His 82 run knock was the one which guided the visitors to a commanding position.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. But it was only Steve Smith who held the innings with his double ton. After Warner and Harris were dismissed by Stuart Board cheaply. It was a healthy partnership which ensured that The Aussies are still in the game.

Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith rebuilt the Australian innings. Their partnership was the one which turned out to be a commanding one for Australia.  They both toiled with the England bowlers when the 114 run stand was shared between them.

Labuschagne had an excellent start to his Test career. He scored 4 back to back fifties to his name and he was good support to his senior partner Steve Smith. Labuschagne again couldn’t convert this score into 3 figure mark, he lost his wicket when looked good for a hundred. Labuschagne was out for 67 runs.

Steve Smith continued at the other but there was a little support provided by Travis Head and Mathew Wade. Both the batsmen couldn’t do much as Head was out for 19 and Wade could score only 16 runs to his name.

Skipper Tim Paine finally came good with the bat. He used his batting skills and scored his 1st fifty-plus score in the series. Paine and Smith shared a much-needed partnership which ensured Australia to score close to 400 runs.

Smith was again in the action after he missed the Leeds test match which Australia lost by a run. This partnership took Australia above the 350 run mark. The partnership of 145 runs again made the England bowlers toil hard to get those wickets.

Smith’s wicket was a difficult one to get. England bowlers tried hard but they had no success. Smith was dismissed finally but not before he took Australia to a commanding position.

Paine and Starc slammed half-centuries which brought more headache to the hosts. And Steve Smith’s glorious run continued in the Ashes test series as he notched his maiden double ton in this series.

Tim Paine scored 56 runs and Mitchell Starc was unbeaten with 54 runs alongside with Nathan Lyon who was not out on 29 runs. But the star of the show was Steve Smith who was finally out to the part-time spin of Joe Root. Smith scored a magnificent 211 runs.  Australia declared their innings at  487 runs in their 1st innings.

England bowlers were made to toil hard by Steve Smith and co. Despite they got the openers and the middle order cheaply, England bowlers went for plenty.

Jofra Archer who was so impressive in the last test match went wicketless in the 1st innings. For England, Stuart Board was the pick of the bowlers. He took 3 wickets alongside Craig Overton and Jack Leach took 2 wickets each with Joe Root picked up 1 wicket to his name.

England’s batting woes continued to haunt them. The change in the opening position didn’t solve any problems for the hosts. Denly was pushed as the opener and Jason Roy batted down at number 4. But this also didn’t work for them as they lost Denly very early. He scored just 4 runs.

Craig Overton was sent as the night watchman but he lasted only for 15 balls. Overton was out for just 5 runs.

Then the skipper and Rory Burns shared a much-needed partnership which kept England on the toes. Joe Root and Burns shared a partnership of 144 runs which allowed them to be in the game. This partnership went well England and it needed to stay long but that didn’t happen. Hazlewood broke this stand and gave England a huge blow. Rory Burns was out for 81 runs.

Two over later, skipper Joe Root again failed to convert his start into the 3 figure mark. Hazlewood again struck a huge blow, this time Joe Root was caught plumb in front for 71 runs.

England had a collapse as the middle order batsmen didn’t convert their starts, Jason Roy, again a disappointment. He scored just 22 runs. Johnny Bairstow continued his inconsistent form. He was out for 26 runs. Ben Stokes, who saved England in the last match was out pretty early. He scored just 16 runs.

England reached the 300 run mark only because of Jos Buttler. His 41 run knock ensured that England scored at least 301 runs on the board. The lower order also didn’t do much. England were 196 runs behind of the Australian total.

The Aussies continued their dominance with the ball. Josh Hazlewood was again who ripped the England batsmen with his fiery pace and bounce. He took 4 wickets alongside Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins took 3 wickets each to their name.

The same old story in Australia’s 2nd innings. The openers and the middle order failed to cope with Board, Archer and Leach. David Warner bagged his first pair in test cricket.

It was Steve Smith’s brilliance which helped the visitors to overcome this situation. Marnus Labuschagne had a rare failure. He was out for just 11 runs but Smith stood tall once again and delivered well for the Aussies.

Smith got the support of Mathew Wade and Skipper Tim Paine which allowed Australia to an advantage of the earlier 196 run lead.

The former skipper Smith scored 82 runs and Wade scored 34 with skipper Paine score 22 runs which allowed Australia to declare their innings at 186 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

Australia had set England a target of 382 runs for victory.

Steve Smith was the huge difference between the two sides. England bowlers couldn’t get his wicket early and they paid a heavy price for that.

England had lost the match on the day 4 itself when they lost Rory Burns and Joe Root for a golden duck. Root became the first England skipper to bag 3 ducks in a series.

On the last day, Joe Denly finally came good and scored a half-century to his name. His first in the series and his career. But couldn’t convert that into a big one which England needed the most. He was out for 53 runs.

England wanted to save the test match by batting the whole of the last day. They fell more 14 overs short of doing that miracle.

The dismissal of Ben Stokes was also the turning point of the last day. Stokes scored only 1 run.

Jos Buttler the birthday boy hung in and tried to unusual innings. He batted for long and 34 from 111 balls he faced. But England needed him to do a much better job. Johnny Bairstow too couldn’t do much, he was out for 25 runs which he scored of 61 balls with just 1 boundary.

The lower order resisted very well but the Aussie bowlers were too good in front of them. Craig Overton and Jack Leach threaten Australia to bat out the remaining overs of the day. But a change in the bowling did the trick.

Marnus Labuschagne took the wicket of Jack Leach for 12 runs and that brought Australia right back in the contest and later Josh Hazlewood dismissed Craig Overton for 21 runs, which he scored from 111 balls. That was it, Australia reclaimed the Ashes by winning this test match by 185 runs.

The Aussies held their nerve despite some resistance showed by England’s lower-order batsmen. Pat Cummins was the pick of the bowler in this innings. He picked up 4 wickets along with Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon took wickets each while Labuschagne and Starc took 1 wicket each to their name.

Australia won the 4th test match by 185 runs and lead the five 5 match test series 2-1,

Man of the match was awarded to Steve Smith for his double ton in the 1st innings and 82 in the second.

Next Match – Australia Vs England 5 and the final test match at Kennington Oval from 12th August 2019 to 16th August 2019.
