The BCCI announced the Asia Cup India team that is commencing from 15th September. The tournament will see Asia’s biggest cricketing nations in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan compete for bragging rights. The quadrangular series will see 50 over matches being played between all the sides with the two sides with most points after the group matches squaring off for a shot at the cup in the final.
The BCCI selection committee and core group decided the Asia Cup India team to represent the country at Asia’s biggest cricket tournament. With the series kicking off just a few days after India’s long and hectic two-month tour of England commences, the BCCI has decided to rest some big names, drafting in fresh and young talent.
Captain Virat Kohli is rested for the Asia Cup in lieu of his long involvement in cricket in the last year. This sees opener Rohit Sharma being handed over the captaincy for the series. The batsman is well rested after being dropped for the five-match test series against England and will be raring to prove a point to his critics and the selectors. His opening partner Shikhar Dhawan take over the vice-captain role.
“Considering the workload we have given Virat Kohli rest. He has been playing continuously for quite some time. We need to preserve some of our precious players who are playing all 3 formats, looking at that workload we have started with Virat and he will be rested for Asia Cup,” said the selectors.
The 16 men strong squad sees Bhuvneshwar Kumar make a return to the side after his injury lay-off. India’s pace spearhead returns to bolster India’s otherwise weak pace attack that sees Jasprit Bumrah and newcomers Shardul Thakur and Khaleel Ahmed complete the line-up. Kumar’s comeback is music to Indian fans with the fast bowler not only a vital cog in India’s line-up owing to his experience but also his immaculate line and length which are sure to trouble batsmen and provide India with crucial match-winning performances.
In the spin department, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav retain their place.
Ambati Rayadu’s impressive showing for India A sees him make the squad after losing out on the England tour due to failing the yo-yo test. Suresh Raina failed to make the cut after failing to impress against England.
