In the doubles tie, Pablo Carreno Busta and Nadal beat their Japanese counterparts, Ben McLachlan and, Go Soeda 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-6 in a 115-minute long match after recovering from 3/6 in the tiebreaker round.
Team Spain, consisting of captain Francisco Roig, Nadal, Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Feliciano Lopez will now head to Sydney where they will meet their opponent on Friday.
