Attack on doctors and healthcare workers – At the outset, Team ‘tentaran’ salutes all those who are braving the odds to keep their nations and the world safe. In times of peace, nCovid-19 has proven to be a very dangerous foe because it attacks invisibly. If healthy without any exposure, then, all that is asked from the people of any country is to stay indoors and follow simple guidelines. But many just look for excuses to step out and behave irresponsibly. If exposed to an infected person or unfortunately if one is infected, then all that is required is to report to the appropriate authority. However, people don’t even do that. The healthcare teams are then required to follow the trail of the virus and visit localities housing the infected or those under immediate threat. In India, such teams are regularly attacked and often violently.

Alarmed by the violence against Indian healthcare professionals, team tentaran tried to look for such cases in other parts of the world. We were surprised to learn that as per a study conducted by Dr.Mukul Chandra Kapoor (published in J Anaesthesiol Clin Pharmacol. 2017 Apr-Jun; 33(2): 145–147), Healthcare professionals regularly face violence. It is a shameful fact that in India 3 out of 4 persons from this noble profession have experienced violence during their years of practice. Some data from UK and other countries suggests that almost 50% of healthcare professionals have faced violence of some kind from their patients or the patient’s relative/s. Most countries have a ‘zero tolerance’ policy and immediately act against the perpetrators.

UP Government took immediate action against those involved in the attack in Moradabad and reportedly arrested seventeen people.

However, the problem is rampant. Just a few months back armed attacks were carried out against Ebola response teams in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is agreed that in most cases it is uneducated and/or criminally minded who carry out these attacks on people from this noble profession. But the bigger concern is that they can even think that attacking healthcare workers is possible and they will get away with it. India must enforce very stringent policies to protect our healthcare staff specifically and all #coronawarriors in general. No one should even think of the possibility of an attack on the protectors and saviours of life.

A special day ‘World Humanitarian Day’ is also celebrated each year on 19 August to remind the world that anyone associated with healthcare is to be respected and is #NotATarget.

This year 2020 actually belongs to the healthcare professionals and the entire world should begin to see the dedication and sacrifices made by these noble people for the good of people in any part of the world. Uniquely experienced Indian medical teams traveled to other countries to help with nCovid-19 willingly and happily.

#clapforcarers is now a global phenomenon. Speaking to Dr.Shailendra Singh, a well-known surgeon in London, UK, we learnt that private enterprises are providing free non-alcoholic beverages, food, Uber rides and hotel stay to the overworked healthcare teams busy with attending to Corona patients. Dr.Singh believes that the attitude of the people towards medical teams has improved significantly during the nCovid pandemic. However, we all need to understand and respect the contribution of all Doctors, Nurses and other healthcare professionals to keep us safe and healthy so that they can focus more on protecting us rather than worrying about protecting themselves.
