Australia vs England 3rd Test 2019 Ashes – Australia Vs England rivalry in test cricket is still a classic encounter after these two teams fought a neck to neck battle at Lords. That battle ended in a draw. Now all the action of the 3rd test Match of this 5 match test series will be shifted to Headingly in Leeds on 22nd August 2019.

Australia will have to face a tough battle now, as there will be no Steve Smith in this test match. Steve was injured during the 2nd test match after he got a blow on his neck while ducking the bouncer bowled by Jofra Archer. Smith showed a lot of courage when he came to bat after being retired. In this match, the openers will play a huge role. David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will have to deliver in this situation and the team needs a solid start from these two. But, both Warner and Bancroft haven’t had a memorable comeback to the test side. Warner has not yet found his lost touch. He played some handy knocks in the world cup. But, his comeback into the Test arena hasn’t impressed anyone at all.

The same goes with Cameron Bancroft. He was forcefully selected into the test team. He played a good hand against England A team in the warm-up match. But, somehow couldn’t carry that form into the test matches. Now, without Steve Smith, Australia will want Warner and Bancroft to fire in this crucial test match. If Australia wins this match, they can’t lose the series. Usman Khawaja and Travis Head will have to bat like they are the leaders of the Australian middle order. In the absence of Smith, Head and Khawaja will have to be the middle order pillars for Australia.

Generally, the batsmen bat around Steve Smith. But, they don’t have that luxury in this test match. Head will have to hold his head high and play a big knock while Khawaja will need to play as he plays at home. The middle-order which is held by Steve Smith will be tested by England at Leeds. Mathew Wade who scored a brilliant century in the 2nd of the 1st test match at Edgbaston will need to play a similar inning at Leeds. He will have to play this series as a pure batsman and is expected to deliver now when the team is in need.

Tim Paine’s low score of runs will hurt Australia in the absence of Steve Smith. Paine has been a wonderful player behind the stumps and his captaincy has also been good. But, his problems with the bat continues to be poor and Australia will surely want their skipper to lead from the front. Marnus Labschagne was a good replacement for Steve Smith in the 2nd test match at Lords. He scored a gusty fifty to his name and wasn’t too afraid of Jofra Archer’s lethal bouncers. He said that he was determined to play even after he got hit by Jofra Archer once. His determination saved Australia from the defeat. His gusty knock allowed the Aussies to stay 1-0 in the 5 match test series. He will be expected to deliver with the same determination in the next test match at Lord’s.

The bowlers have done a good job in the first two matches. Even though there was no Starc and James Pattinson in the 2nd test but still, Peter Siddle, Pat Cumins, Josh Hazlewood, and Lyon did a wonderful job, especially in the first innings. In the second innings, Australia dropped Ben Stokes which took the game away from them. Stokes was let off early in the 2nd innings on the final day and that proved to be a costly miss as Stokes scored his 2nd test hundred at Lords. Australia will need to be careful in the 3rd test match and they can’t allow any chances to go against them.

England is also haunted with some batting issues. Like Australia, their top 3 have also not performed too well for them. The poor form of Jason Roy and Joe Root have put a lot of problem for England.

Roy hasn’t started his test cricket journey on a very good note and now the coach thinks that he is a good middle-order batsman. Then, in this case, why was Roy preferred as an opener for the first two test matches? Who will open the innings with Rory Burns for the 3rd test match? These are the questions which the coach, captain, and the team management will need to answer.

Skipper Joe Root’s form also has been an issue with the hosts. Root scored 50 runs in the first innings of the 1st test but there was nothing after that. He needs to stand tall for England and will have to bat out of skin to level the series at Leeds.

Ben Stokes scored a brilliant century at Lords which saved the game for England and that was the only positive sign for England from the Lord’s test match. Another positive thing for England was the form of Johnny Bairstow. He played well in both innings at the Lord’s test. England can try Bairstow as the opener and push Roy at number 5 or 6. But, this is not a time for experiments. England is on the verge of losing the Ashes which is why they will have to stick with the openers and expect them to do well in the do or die test match situation.

Jos Buttler played a good hand in the second innings of the 2nd test match. But, he didn’t look at his best. He has been under pressure due to a low score of runs. Now, he will have to stand up and lead the batting department at Leeds. Jofra Archer impressed everyone with his debut performance against Steve Smith when he bowled like a pure West Indien. His lethal bouncers were just like the old West Indien bowlers who injured many batsmen.

Jofra’s bounces will come back as warned by Stokes to the Aussies batsmen. The West Indien born England cricketer is the player to watch out for this 3rd test match. Board and Woakes are still the leaders of the bowling attack in the absence of James Anderson. They will need to do what Jimmy Anderson has done for England over the years. The new ball has got the Aussies openers but they will also need to take the middle order batsmen who looked quite comfortable facing Board and Woakes. Jack Leach was decently impressive at Lords. While the attention was on Jofra Archer’s lethal pace, Leach quietly bowled his quota of overs and gave the important breakthrough to the team.
