The Aussies were so near but yet far in the test match at Leeds. They just couldn’t get Ben Stokes which is why they lost that game. Australia was in control but that knock of Stokes ensured that England wasn’t out of the game.

The Australian bowlers have played magnificently in the 3 test matches so far. But, in the 2nd innings of the Lords and the Leeds test, the bowlers couldn’t dismiss Ben Stokes. They will have to come with something special to dismiss Stokes.

In the 1st innings, England was bowled out for just 67 runs. Josh Hazlewood was the star for Australia. He picked up 5 wickets which rattled the hosts completely. Australia will expect the same performance from Hazlewood on Wednesday.

The batsmen too will need to deliver for the visitors. In the first innings, only David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne were the batsmen who scored their fifties. But, a lot was expected from Marcus Harris who replaced Cameron Bancroft. Harris failed to deliver in both the innings. Now, what could the Aussies do? Can they bring Bancroft back? Or will they continue with Harris? It would be interesting to see the change that Australia will make for the 4th test match.

Mathew Wade who batted so well in the 1st test match has been silent with the bat after his superb 110 run knocks. Wade is expected to deliver in the 4th test match. This same rule also goes with Khawaja, who played well in the 2nd innings of the 1st test match. Australia will want to see their middle order to come good.

Travis Head was the savior for Australia at Lords. But in the 3rd test match, he couldn’t do much. He scored 0 in the 1st innings and 25 in the 2nd. Australia will not want to continue with this performance from Head. He should take some inspiration from the innings he played at Lords and deliver for Australia at Old Trafford.

Tim Paine, the skipper hasn’t been that batsman to vouch for. He has batting skills but somehow he hasn’t been amongst the runs in his career. This was seen even before his captaincy time.

Paine has to lead the Australian team from the front. He just can’t lead his team behind the stumps but should also deliver in the crunch situation with the bat in hand. This test series will be a tough test for Paine as a batsman, as a keeper and as the captain of the side. If Australia wants to save the series then Tim Paine will have come up with all these 3 roles.

Marnus Labuschagne has been an ideal replacement to Steve Smith. He played well at Lords and at Leeds and slammed 50 in both the innings. Australia will want to score a big ton in the next test. With Steve Smith ready to play at Old Trafford, the batting will become an easy task for the Australians.

The return of Steve Smith will have a huge impact on the game. His presence on the batting crease is itself a big boost for Australia and if needed Smith can also roll his arm over with Nathan Lyon.

Cummins, Nathan Lyon, and James Pattinson will need to deliver in the second innings as well. Hazlewood stole the show in the first innings but in the 2nd innings he tried his best but Stokes was just too good. Australia will need to tackle the Stokes effect to win the next test match.

David Warner is another batsman who has played well in both the innings. He played a good hand in the 1st innings but in the 2nd innings, he couldn’t open his account. Australia will want Warner to play as he played before the ban.

England sealed a magical victory at Leeds. This win was possible only because of Ben Stokes. He was the second man for England. At Lords, his century helped England in drawing the test match and at Leeds. His brilliance again came in the way of Australia. But, this time Stokes ensured that England will square the series to 1 all.

There was another brilliance which rocked Australia. With Stokes, Jofra Archer was also impressive. In just his 2nd test match Archer picked a six-wicket haul to his name at Leeds.  His hostile spell allowed England to bundle out Australia for just 179 runs. In the second innings also, Archer picked up 2 wickets to his name.

It would be another great contest between Archer and Smith. Archer will want to continue his upper hand on Smith and the Aussie batsman will look to dominate his bat against the pacy bouncers and the toe crushing Yorkers.

England will need runs from their top order. Jason Roy hasn’t been the perfect opener yet and nor has Joe Denly been the perfect number 4 batsman for the hosts. The form of Jos Buttler will also worry England. These are the 3 main issues which England has to sort out before the 4th test begins on Wednesday.

Joe Root still hasn’t found his nick which helped him score those daddy hundreds. If they want to win the Ashes from here then Root shouldn’t be just satisfied with the scores of the 50s and 77s. Root is the backbone of England’s batting, so they need big hundreds from their skipper.

Rory Burns will need to step up after his brilliant first test and his handy 58 runs in the 2nd test. He will need to deliver in the 4th test match. Johnny Bairstow will need to continue his good form. He had some form in the 2nd test match which was played at Lords. Now he will have to deliver as England will look to reclaim the Ashes after being 1-0 down.

Craig Overton has been added to the squad as James Anderson will miss the last two Ashes test matches as well. It means Stuart Board will continue as the leader of England’s bowling attack. Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Jack Leach, and Overton will be the bowlers for the remaining Ashes test series.

Stokes has been in a phenomenal form for England and hasn’t wasted it. This is the thing which the other England batsmen need to learn from him.
