Looking to build on their 1-0 lead in the series, the Indian camp will be raring to go come tomorrow, 14 December, when they will take on Australia in the second test match of the four-match series. However, the Indian camp dealt a huge blow ahead of the test with Rohit Sharma and Ashwin joining the already injured Prithvi Shaw to miss out on what will be an extremely crucial match for the side. Announcing the Australia Vs India second test squads 2018, the BCCI confirmed that the trio has been ruled out of the upcoming test.
While Prithvi Shaw was suspected to have a long lay-off after the cruciate ligament ankle injury he had sustained while fielding during India’s solitary warm-up match against Cricket XI Australia, Rohit will miss the match owing to a bad back. The batsman has sustained a jerk in his back while fielding during the Adelaide Oval test, one that he is currently going through rehabilitation for as he looks to be fit in time for the third test.
Rohit who had been taken off the field in the second innings with the back injury has, unfortunately, been unable to recover. In Rohit’s absence, Hanuma Vihari becomes the prime candidate to come into the setup for the No. 6 slot.
Meanwhile, Ashwin has been ruled out due to an abdominal strain. Ashwin has endured an injury-filled year, one that has seen groin and abdominal strains recover time and time again to keep him out for a good period of 2018. Earlier this year, he had played the Southampton Test against England with a groin injury and had also missed the IPL 2017 for the same.
While Ashwin will be a big miss for the Indians especially after his six-wicket haul in the first test, the Indians will not be looking to ring in a like for like replacement for him. On a Perth pitch that promises to offer a lot of paces and bounce for the quicks, India’s strategy ahead of the second test will be to go in with a 4 man pace line-up which has seen Bhuvneshwar Kumar being recalled to the 13-man Australia Vs India second test squads 2018.
Speaking about the injury crisis to have inflicted his side, Virat Kohli said he was confident in his side and sounded upbeat about his team’s chances despite the setback. He emphasized on the importance to play percentage cricket and was all praises for India’s pace battery ahead of the Perth test were the pacers will hold the key to India’s fortunes.
Australia, on the other hand, has stuck to the same side that they fielded in the first test as they look to level the series.
