The first test match ever to be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth is one that India would like to put behind them quickly. Riddled by mistakes, it was an Indian performance that was shoddy, sloppy and shambolic in nature, one that was sealed by a second inning batting collapse that is all too reminiscent of recent Indian fourth innings on foreign soil.

With the result is all but known to everyone, Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari resumed India’s sojourn as the pair looked to make the defeat as less embarrassing as possible for the visitors. However, it was yet another batting collapse for the visitors, with Vihari walking back to the pavilion after hitting Starc’s delivery to Harris to expose India’s tail to a fiery, fire-breathing Australian pace battery spell.

Pant, all but ended any hopes India had of delaying the inevitable after Handscomb pulled off a stunner to send him packing. Mistiming for the 100th time in his innings of 30, Pant failed to get away with another heave off Lyon with Handscomb making no mistake. It was too big of a task to ask from India’s bowlers from there onwards with the last four wickets contributing just two runs between them as Cummins and Pant wreaked havoc to give Australia a comfortable victory on Australia Vs India day 2 test 5.

Nathan Lyon was adjudged the man of the match award for his 8 wicket haul in the Perth test, one that saw him pick up 5 in the first and 3 wickets in the second innings. He helped change the course of the match for his side with the crucial wicket of Rahane and Kohli in the first and second innings respectively, a performance that left the supporters ruing the absence of a front-line spinner in the Indian playing XI.

Speaking on the team selection, Virat Kohli said that the management had never considered replaying Ashwin with a like for like bowler given the green nature of the track before the match commenced. He also refused to comment on if Vijay and Rahul would continue to keep their spots in the team come the MCG test match.

“We didn’t announce that we are going to have a new opening combination,” Kohli said when asked about induction of Mayank Agarwal for the third test of the series.

“We are looking forward to Melbourne now. This Test match is done, the series is poised well and both teams have played good cricket. I think everyone should look forward to that. Our focus is definitely on MCG Test,” he added.
