Bayern Munich has confirmed the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy him for a period with a buy out option for 110 million euros. Bayern will also be paying the wages for Coutinho.

Philippe Coutinho is a Brazilian player who made his debut in 2010 and has earned 50 caps for Brazil so far. He was part of the squad in Copa America in 2016 and also participated in the 2018 World Cup which was held in France where his team was named ‘The FIFA World Cup Dream Team’. He made his start with the Brazilian club, Vasco De Gama and was signed by Inter later. Inter initially loaned him back to Brazil but got him back as he made his first appearance for them in 2010.

In January 2013, he was picked up by Liverpool for a fee of less than 10 million. Coutinho flourished at Anfield and got the nickname of ‘Magician’. He became the star man under Brendan Rodgers’ side and carried with his performance regularly. He has scored 54 goals and 45 assists for the reds and has also made the PFA Team of the year in 2015. After 5 very successful seasons in England, he decided to move to FC Barcelona.

In the year 2018, Barcelona paid a transfer fee of €142 million for his services and Phil had a mediocre first season as he didn’t have the freedom that he earlier enjoyed at Liverpool. He also faced a lot of criticism from the Spanish media for his performances. Despite scoring 21 goals in 76 appearances for the Spanish giants, he has fallen short of expectations and was put by the club for sale.

Tottenham was said to be one of his biggest admirers but the move fell short as the white lilies acquired Giovani Lo Celso instead. Bayern Munich was in need of a strong signing as they had been lacking in star power and their presence in Europe. Coutinho will be wearing the number 10 jersey at Bayern Munich which was previously belonged to the Legendary Arjen Robben.
