Indian middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh was dropped from the Indian team announced to face Sri Lanka in the upcoming one day and T20 internationals. Delhi Daredevils player, Rishabh Pant was also a shock exclusion despite his magnificent show in the IPL.Spinner Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin were decided to be rested by the BCCI
A senior BCCI official, who is privy to selection policy was quoted telling news agency Press Trust of India that Yuvraj is no longer in contention for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. “His batting has lost sting. He rarely bowls and his fielding has gone down a few notches.” If we have to prepare a team for 2019 World Cup, we had to take a call now. In the case of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, we still don’t have a replacement but Yuvraj’s place has multiple contenders,” said the official. With the exclusion of Yuvraj, the board has made it clear that they are focusing on the next world cup and at providing Captain Virat Kohli a youthful side with some experience under their belt.
Pacer Shardul Thakur was rewarded for his magnificent performances in the IPL for Rising Pune Supergiants with a place in the squad. His inclusion will provide a fresh breath of air to the Indian pace unit which will be without Shami and Umesh Yadav in the series. He will be looking to impress with his performances as India will be without all their experienced bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah is making a comeback while rookie Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur has also been included on the side. The selection committee was a bit harsh though on Rishabh Pant who was replaced by KL Rahul.
