Best Wicket Keeper Captains in International Cricket – Cricket is such an intense game where captaincy plays a huge role. But being wicket-keeper captain is the toughest job of all. He is a silent man who is a leader behind the stumps who takes all the responsibility of the field placements, bowling changes.

The wicket-keeping job in international cricket is the most difficult one. A successful keeper should have the stamina to keep for 50 overs in ODI Cricket or 90 overs in a day of a test match. He should never let his concentration down and with that the wicket keepers should also have quick reflexes to affect a close run out or to affect a close stumping.

But some wicket-keepers were the best captains of their times. They were instrumental in winning a series or tournaments hosted by the International Cricket Council. These keeper skippers contributed heavily with the bat and the work behind the stumps was also great.

MSD won all the ICC Tournaments when he captained India. India was searching for a wicketkeeper who can bat and then India was blessed to have Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the keeper-batsman. In 2004 he made his international debut and never looked back since. Now he has many records to his name as a batsman, wicket-keeper and a captain. He has most runs as an Indian keeper. He also has affected the most dismissals as a wicket-keeper in all the 3 formats.

After India won the World T20 in 2007 in South Africa, he was the captain of India’s 50 overs format after Rahul Dravid stepped down from his captaincy. Then after the retirement of Anil Kumble, Mahi took over the test captaincy.

The smiling Sangakkara is adored for his great batsmanship in International Cricket. He is also known as the best keeper batsman and many of the gentlemen say that he is the best keeper-batsman that Sri Lanka has produced.

Kumar Sangakkara was the best alongside Adam Gilchrist of Australia and Mark Boucher of South Africa. Sanga’s elegant stroke play with his ever-reliable keeping and his crafty, astute thinking has made him a brilliant player around the globe.

Kumar Sangakkara was a good captain as well. But many of us don’t remember because he has not won any ICC events. He led Sri Lanka in the World T20 in 2009 and went till the finals of the World Cup 2011 but unfortunately, they couldn’t win that tournament as they lost the final against India.

Mushfiqur is a living legend in Bangladesh. He is the successful captain of Bangladesh in test matches. He has captained Bangladesh in 8 test matches till now, out of which Bangladesh won 6 matches.

He has been a decent captain in the 50 over format also. He has captained Bangladesh in 37 ODIs and won 11 of them as the captain. He has captained Bangladesh in 90 matches, which is the most by any captain of Bangladesh.

Baz captained New Zealand side in 62 ODI matches out of which the team won 36. As an ODI skipper, he scored 1862 runs. He was an attacking captain who set the field to attack the opposition. He was a leader who led from the front In test matches, he captained the Kiwi nation for 31 test matches, won 11 and drew 11. As a test captain, he also scored 2355 runs.

He also captained New Zealand in the T20Is. Baz captained in 28 T20I, out of which they won 12 T20Is. He also scored 735 runs as the skipper of the shortest format.
