- Srikanth defeated Abian 21-15,12-21,21-14
- Both qualified for round 4 of the tournament
The Indian contingent kept the Indian flag flying high at badminton’s showpiece event, the BWF World Championship. Top shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Srikanth both won their round three matches to book their spot in the pre-quarters of the biggest badminton tournament of the year. For Saina it was smooth sailing after her Turkish opponent failed to put on any kind of challenge to the Indian shutter, handing the match on a platter 21-17, 21-8 to Nehwal. Srikant, on the other hand, had to survive a mini-scare after being put to the test by Spain’s Abian. A tightly contested match went to three sets, with Srikant winning the deciding set 21-14 to march onto the next round.
Saina couldn’t have wished for an easier match. Facing some fight from her opponent in the first set, Saina played an entirely different animal in the second set. Sapped out of energy and looking like she had given up after the first set itself, AliyeDerimbag handed the match to Nehwal on a plate, losing the second set 21-8.
Playing just a little while back, Kidambi Srikanth took on World No. 48 in his round 3 match. The encounter that lasted 62 minutes troubled the sixth-ranked Indian more than we had expected. Caught off guard by Pablo Abian’s aggressive and ferocious game, Srikanth succumbed his 1-0 lead after losing the second set convincingly 12-21. However one to adapt to his opponent’s quickly, Srikant took no time in bouncing back in the decider. With the scores level at 12-12, Srikant took the lead for the first time in the match to seal the next 9 points 9-2 and qualify for the pre-quarters of the world championship.
