BWF World Super Series Final 2017: Sindhu Wins Opener, Srikanth Loses

It was a mixed day for India on the opening day of the BWF World Super Series Final as PV Sindhu won her opening match but Kidambi Srikanth faltered. The 22-year-old Sindhu defeated He Bingjiao 21-11, 16-21, 21-18 in the Group A match that lasted an hour and four minutes. Srikanth, however, suffered a 13-21, 17-21 loss to Viktor Axelsen.
The 22-year-old Sindhu kicked off her tournament by facing World No. 9 He Bingjiao. It was a stern test for the Indian against a determined opponent who give it all her and took the match right down to the wire. After taking home the first set with consummate ease 21-11, Sindhu ended up losing a tightly contested second set which saw the Chinese roar back in style. With both opponents on the mat in the third set, Sindhu’s class outshone as both matched each other shot for shot. Sindhu ended up edging the set by just three points in a match that sapped the energy out of both the players. The win meant that Sindhu started the series on a positive note and she remains on her course of wanting to fulfill her dream of winning the BWF Series.
“It has been a good year for me and I’m very happy with my performance. I won two Super Series and runners-up and also silver at World Championship. I have no regrets because I did pretty well this season. Now I really hope the year ends on a good note that is at the Dubai Super Series Finals, I hope I do well there” Sindhu said.
In an event that has all the top players in it Kidambi Srikanth fell in his first match of Group B. He lost to World No.1 Viktor Axelsen as he repeated old mistakes to hand the top seed a comfortable win. He went down 13-21, 17-21 to lose in straight sets in a mere 38 minutes.
