C Rajagopalachari Biography – Personal Life

C. Rajagopalachari was born on December 10, 1878, to Chakravarti Venkatarya and Chakravarti Singaramma. Rajagopalachari was born in Thorapalli Village, in Madras of the British Presidency. He was the third son to Chakravarti Venkatarya. After completing his primary education, he passed his matriculation examination in 1891, following which, in 1894, he obtained a degree in Bachelor of Arts from the Central College in Bangalore. After obtaining his graduation degree, C. Rajagopalachari took admission to the Presidency College of Madras, wherein he studied law and was passed out in 1897.

In 1900, Rajaji started practicing law in Salem where he heard of a leader who was creating ripples with his ideas of Civil Disobedience in South Africa. C. Rajagopalachari was also a member of the Indian National Congress and started attending sessions. He was also one of those who protested against the draconian Rowlatt Act. Soon after, C. Rajagopalachari gave up his law practice and became an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his Non-Cooperation movement. He also extended his support to Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March movement in the year 1930. Rajagopalachari was also elected as the President of the Congress Committee in Tamil Nadu and he also talked the Congress party to participate in the General elections of 1937.

Rajaji’s political career started shaping up when he was elected as the Premier of Madras Presidency after the Congress won the elections in 1937. Soon after being elected as the Premier in Madras Presidency, C. Rajagopalachari made an effort to abolish untouchability in India in the year 1939. He issued the Madras Temple Entry Authorization and Indemnity Act. According to the Madras Temple Entry Authorization and Indemnity Act, the Dalits were allowed to enter the temples.

After India was divided, C. Rajagopalachari was given the charge as the Governor of West Bengal, following which, in 1947, he was handed over the charge of Governor-General temporarily of Independent India in the absence of Lord Mountbatten. When Lord Mountbatten, who was the last British viceroy left India in 1948, Rajaji was handed over the charge of Governor-General till India became Republic in 1950.

Even though C. Rajagopalachari wanted to retire from politics, he was unable to and was instead made the Chief Minister of Madras in 1952. During his tenure as the Chief Minister of Madras (now Chennai), he brought in some monumental reforms in the education system. He, in fact, made Hindi mandatory in Tamil schools. Rajaji died on 25th December 1972.
