Coming back to Champions League 2018-19 round 2, gameweek 2 threw up some delicious encounters our way. With 26 goals scored on Wednesday itself, the 16 matches were a goal fest, throwing our way plenty of talking points going into the international break.
Manchester City finally got back to winning ways in Europe’s biggest club tournament with a 2-1 win away to Hoffenheim. The win was far from straightforward though for City who was made to huff and puff by Hoffenheim who were determined to get a result from the match. It was only a late rescue act by David Silva that saved City the blushes and helped them finally open their account in Group F.
The show was stolen by Shakhtar and Lyon on the first day of matches in round 2 with Lyon staging an incredible comeback to take a point away from the match. Trailing 2-0, Lyon pulled back two goals in the 70th and 72nd minutes to stay on top of their group.
Tuesday looked to be a fairly routine day in the life of the champions league with Juventus and Roma racking up big wins before Real Madrid and Bayern Munch’s matches occurred.

Defending champions Real Madrid were stunned by CSKA Moscow to give arguably the biggest upset of the week. Intercepting a poor cross by Toni Kroos, Vlasic made the most of the error by the Madrid midfielder to score the only goal of the match in the 2nd minute and earn Moscow’s biggest win in recent times. Bayern Munich was equally poor on the night, playing out an uninspired 1-1 draw to Ajax at home.
Wednesday began with PSG routing Crvena Zvezda 6-1 at home. The PSG attack was at its diminutive best with its dynamic front three of Mbappé, Neymar and Cavani schooling the visitors. Far too good for their opponents, PSG raced into a 5-0 lead by the end of the first half itself, before eventually going on to play in a lesser gear come the second.
The headliner of the night saw Liverpool travel to Naples. While the first half was a drab affair that failed to impress with both sides too tentative to come out and play, the second was a brighter affair. Finally settling in their groove, Napoli were a delight to watch once they got going. Exploiting a poor Liverpool side that was too sluggish on the day, Napoli ran circles around their defence to find the crucial breakthrough in the dying moments of the game via Insigne.
The gameweek was a disappointing one for English clubs with Tottenham being condemned to a 2-4 defeat at Wembley. Taking on a Barcelona side that was coming on the back of some poor results, Tottenham were poor in their approach to the match. Slack defending saw them concede two early goals. While they did manage to peg back two courtesy of some quickly bad defending by their opponents, Tottenham went off to sleep far too often in defence to concede just when they were finding a way back into the match. The defeat for them sees them struggling at their place in their group with qualification looking a far away dream.
