Champions League round of 16 results
Bayern Munich vs Liverpool
After having failed to capitalise on the chances they had created at home, Liverpool’s front 3 knew they would have to take accountability on themselves if the club was to put in an exceptional performance. As the team news started coming in and Liverpool’s midfield trio pivot lacking the ingenuity and creativity needed to supply goals, worst was being feared for the English club.
However, Liverpool was clinical from minute one to 90. After a good opening exchange for the hosts, Firmino’s well-taken chance that came close to opening the scoring for Liverpool changed the complexion of the match entirely. It buoyed Liverpool with their front three of Salah, Mane and Firmino using the skill set in their repertoire to see Bayern Munich exit with a 3-1 defeat.
Mane opened the scoring for Liverpool, getting the first with a well-worked goal that saw him make the most of a woeful piece of goal-keeping. Going around the rushing goal-keeper, Mane found the back of the net before a second from him rounded off Liverpool’s scoring late into the match and took them through to the next round.
Juventus vs Atletico Madrid
Having faced plenty of flak for their uninspired performance in the first leg, the Italian champions put in a performance filled with resolve, will and valour. Making the most of their opponent’s strategy to sit back on their 2-0 advantage, Juventus pressurised from the opening exchanges and they almost had pulled one back early on before the referee made a dubious call, ruling out Ronaldo’s goal for a foul on Oblak.
Unhindered by the decision, Ronaldo got the first few minutes later before heading his second soon into the second half. Having restored parity, Juventus who dominated the entire proceedings were rewarded a penalty late on for a foul on Bernardeschi, one that Ronaldo converted to get his hat trick and see him put the Spanish club out of yet another competition for the umpteenth time.
Barcelona vs Lyon
With the first leg ending 0-0 in France, Lyon knew an early away goal could see them make it through. It wasn’t to be for them though with Barcelona going onto put 5 past them, as the French side showed why they were one of the unlikeliest sides to progress from this round of fixtures.
Manchester City vs Schalke
Despite getting 3 goals away from home, the one goal slender lead was one that meant Manchester City couldn’t rest of their advantage in the second leg. Expected to be a closely contested and feisty encounter, the match turned out to be a complete opposite to what was expected with City’s star performer Aguero getting the first 2.
It opened the leaks in Schalke who was decimated by City on the night. The Premier League champions showed why they are considered one of the main contenders for the trophy, putting in a meticulous performance, one that saw goals come from everywhere as they battered and rattled an innocuous visiting side 7-0 to progress with a one-sided scoreline of 10-2 and make it four out of four for English clubs in the quarter-finals.
