Characters in Ramayan – Ramayana is one of the two major epics of Ancient India. It narrates the life of Lord Rama, who follows a 14 years exile to the forests. This exile was ordered on Lord Rama by his father, King Dasaratha, on request of his wife Kaikeyi. The Ramayan then concludes Lord Rama’s travel across the forests with his wife, Sita, and his brother Lakshman. In this epic of Ramayan, Lord Rama returns back to Ayodhya after rescuing his wife from Ravan.

Lord Rama

Rama was the son of King Dasaratha and Queen Kausalya and was the Prince of Ayodhya. He is believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu and is virtuous, strong, and a man in his own right. He was married to Sita, whom he loved deeply. He also shared a strong bond with his brother Lakshman.

Sita

Sita was the daughter of King Janak. His father found her lying on a sanctified ground and decided to raise her as his own. Sita was famed for her virtue and beauty. She is considered an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi. She married Lord Rama and loved him so much that she followed him into exile.

Ravan

Ravan was the rakshas in Ramayan who performed penance for God Shiva for several years. In return, he received a great blessing in return – he couldn’t be killed by any God, demon or any other divine being. With this gift, his arrogance combined with his intelligence and power which led him to rule over the earth. He was believed to spread terrible evil everywhere he went.

Lakshman

Lakshman was the son of King Dasaratha and brother of Lord Rama. He was deeply devoted to his brother whom he follows through many adventures and quests. He was married to Sita’s young sister, Urmila.

Hanuman

Hanuman was the advisor to Sugriva. He was the son of the wind god Vayu and a vanari woman. Hanuman was also the most beloved bhakt of Sri Ram.

King Dasaratha

King Dasaratha was the father of Lord Rama, Lakshman, Bharata, and Shatrughna. He was a good king with kindness and a great personality.

Viswamitra

Viswamiitra was a sage who was also once a king. He was the one who meditated to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings to defeat a demon and to lift the bow of Shiva. This was his first step in the future king’s great journey.

Lord Shiva

Shiva is a part of the great trinity in Hinduism along with Brahma and Vishnu. He is mostly known to sit in meditation and is able to tame the power of other gods and supernatural beings. He often offers his blessings to those who sit in to meditate with dedication.

Kaikeyi

Kaikeyi was the third and the youngest wife of King Dasaratha. She was the mother of Bharata and was famed for her beauty. It was her, due to which Lord Rama was sent into exile. When she saved King Dasaratha’s life in a battle, the king offered her to grant anything that she asked for. She used this favor to crown Bharata and this sent Lord Rama into exile. This idea was inspired by her main, Manthara.

Sumitra

Sumitra was King Dasartha’s second wife. She had two children, Lakshman and Shatrughna.

Kausalya

Kausalya was the first wife of King Dasaratha. Lord Rama was her son. Although she was kind and wise in nature., she never had a very close relationship with her husband. She loved her son, Rama deeply.

Manthara

Manthara was an old maid of Kaikeyi’s and was known to be a wicked woman. She gave Kaikeyi the idea to ask King Dasaratha to exile Lord Rama and crown their son, Bharata as the next king.

Guha

Guha was the king of the hunters. He ruled near-wilderness of Shringiberapura and was fiercely loyal to Lord Rama.

Bharata

Bharata was the son of King Dasaratha and Kaikeyi. He was a half-brother to Rama, Lakshman, and Shatrughna. He was devoted to his brother Rama, and desperately tried to undo the damage committed by his mother Kaikeyi.

Shatrughna

Shatrughna was the son of King Dasaratha and Sumitra. Shatrughna was a twin brother of Lakshman and a half-brother to Rama and Bharata. He followed Bharata everywhere.

Sumantra

Sumantra was the Chief counselor of King Dasaratha. He was the one who unwillingly ordered Rama into exile.

Surpanakha

Surpanakha was Ravan’s sister and was a powerful rakshasi. She attempted to seduce Lord Rama and also tried to kill Sita.

Maricha

March was a rakshas and uncle of Ravan. Lord Rama defeated him with a magical weapon full of purities. He then renounced his evil ways to become a Rishi.

Khara

Khara was a rakshas who was a cousin to Ravan. He ruled the area of Janasthana which was near the forest where Lord Rama exiled. He was very powerful and enjoyed killing rishis and despoiled sacred rituals.

Jatayu

Jatayu was a powerful golden eagle who spoke in the voice of a human being. He was loyal to King Dasaratha and pledged his service to Lord Rama. Later, he died defending Sita from Ravan.

Kabandha

Kabandha was a rakshas who had a body with no legs or head. He only had arms and a gap in his mouth. He was transformed into this ugly shape by Indra and was also the one who told the brothers to seek Sugriva.

Sugriva

Sugriva was the rightful king of Vanaras. He was usurped by his brother Vali, after which he pledged his service to Lord Rama and Lakshman if they restored him to his throne.

Angada

Angada was the son of Vala and a nephew of Sugriva. He was a Vanara youth who was both brave and intelligent.

Vibheeshana

Vibheeshana was Ravan’s younger brother. Though he was a rakshas, he was wise and good. When Ravana refused to listen to his counsel, he joins Lord Rama’s army.

Jambhavan

Jambhavan was the King of the Riksharaj, also called magical bears. He was a wise and strong ally of Sugriva and Lord Rama.

Indrajit

Indrajit was Ravan’s favorite son. He was also Ravan’s most powerful warrior. He earned his name after he captured Indra, the king of the gods.

Kumbhakarna

Kumbhakarna was Ravan’s brother. He was a giant with infinite strength to sleep for six months straight. He was known to wake up after 6 months only to eat everything he could see.

Agastya

Agastya was an extremely old and powerful Rishi who blessed Lord Rama. When Lord Rama became the king of Ayodhya, he then came to Rama’s palace and told him secret tales about the people he would meet on his journeys.

Janaka

Janaka was the king of Videha and the father of Sita. His original name was Seeradhwaja. He was keenly interested in spiritual discourse and considered himself free from worldly illusions.

Nala and Nila

Nala is credited as the engineer of the Rama Setu. That is why the bridge is also known as Nala Setu.  Nila, another monkey was a chieftain in the army of Ram. He was the commander-in-chief of the monkey army who fought against the demon king Ravana of Lanka. Nila was the son of Agni, the fire-god.

Vali

Vali also known as Bali was king of Kishkindha in Ramayan. He was the spiritual son of Indra and the biological son of Vriksharaja. He was killed by Rama.

Valmiki

Valmiki played an important role in the last chapter of the epic Ramayana. It is believed that when Rama sends Sita to the forest, Sita finds refuge in Sage Valmiki’s ashram. There she gave birth to twin boys Lava and Kusha. Lava and Kusha were Valmiki’s first disciples to whom he taught the Ramayana.

Vibhishana
Vibhishana was the younger brother of Ravana. When Rama defeated Ravana, Vibhishan joined Rama later Rama crowned Vibhishana as the king of Lanka.

Vishwamitra
Vishvamitra was is one of the most venerated rishis or sages in Ramayana. He was the founder of the Gayatri Mantra. Vishvamitra was a Lodh king the great-grandson Kusha. It is said that Vishwamitra used Rama to kill troubling demons.

Shabari

Shabari was a devotee of Lord Rama. One day when Rama, Seeta, and Lakshmana manifest before Shabari she offered berry fruits to Rama. But before giving berries to Rama, she pre-tastes them in order to give only sweet-tasting berries to Rama. Lakshmana takes objection to Rama accepting pre-tasted berries, Rama admonishes Lakshmana and advises him to see the love and affection behind her act.

Sushen
To free Sita from Ravana, Rama and Ravana engaged in a battle. During the battle, Ravana’s eldest son Meghnad shot an arrow towards Lakshmana and he fell unconscious to the ground. Seeing Lakshmana, Hanuman approached Sushena, who directed Hanuman to fetch four plants (Sanjivani Booti) from the Dronagiri Hills: Mruthasanjeevani, Vishalyakarani, Sandhanakarani, and Savarnyakarani.
