Chaudhary Charan Singh was an ordinary man, born on December 23, 1902, in a farmer family where the house was thatched and the roofs were supported by mud walls. He was born in a poor household but despite the conditions of the family he was in, he rose to be a significant figure in India’s political framework. He was popularly known as ‘Champion of India’s peasants’. Chaudhary Charan Singh died on May 29, 1987, in New Delhi. He took charge as the Prime Minister of India from 1979-1980.

Personal Life

He was born in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut into a landless farmer’s family. He had seen grave conditions in his family. Even after battling the crisis in his family, he managed to get a decent education to fight for the rights of the farmers. He was the alma mater of Agra University. He was married to Gayatri Devi.

He had a clean record in academics. In the year 1926, he completed his post-graduation in Arts and in 1927, he became a lawyer.

Chaudhary Charan Singh went on from becoming a Congress nationalist to a freedom fighter for the country and a social reformer for farmers in the country. He was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom struggle and joined the same. He was keen on developing the agriculture sector and wanted to introduce new and improved reforms that benefit the farmers’ community, their villages, and rural development.

Chaudhary Charan Singh joined the Indian National Congress in 1922 when he was serving as a lawyer. During his fight against the British, he was jailed by them several times, but his only agenda was to move forward.

After splitting from the Indian National Congress party, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1970. He became a significant political figure in the state who did not support nepotism and corruption and worked on becoming an efficient leader.

Uttar Pradesh had then witnessed several land reforms, and the key person behind those reforms was Chaudhary Charan Singh. He was the chief architect who led to the finalisation of the reforms and brought in the Department Redemption Bill 1939. Post the land reforms, the salaries of several leaders who were inefficient were also reduced.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was a social reformer and worked on making the country a better place for all citizens. He was a dedicated politician and had the confidence of a large section of society.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was indeed a simple man who would read books and write in his free time. He wrote several books that questioned the status quo and for the people. He somehow became the people’s voice. He has written books on India’s economic policy system and the abolishment of the zamindari system.
