Match Highlights:

  • Chennaiyin won 3-2
  • They are top of the table
  • ATK remained bottom of the table

Chennaiyin FC won an intense match against Atletico de Kolkata as both teams played out their fourth round of matches in the Indian Super League. With Kolkata equalising scores in the 89th minute to peg the score at 2-2, Chennaiyin stole the match by getting the winner in the first minute of extra time. Chennaiyin moved top of the table with the win while Kolkata stayed at the bottom of the pile.

In desperate need of a win, Kolkata stepped out on the Chennai turf needing to turn up badly and defeat the hosts to move up the table. It was however the same old story for them as a leaky defence spilt goals again to concede three on the night as they lost their fourth match of the tournament. The win improved Chennai’s record against Kolkata who had dominated them till now, having won four matches against them out of eight with Chennai only managing to win once.

After a tight first half, the second half opened up with both teams going for the win and played intense attacking football. Chennai ended up taking the lead in the 65th minute through Jeje as their attacking pressure paid off to hand the hosts a well-deserved lead. Zequinha levelled the scoring but their joy was short lived as Chennai took the lead once again in the 84th minute. Finally showing their class Kolkata struck back with only a minute left to peg the score back at 2-2. The match however ultimately went Chennai’s way who ended up getting the winner in extra time and rightfully took home the match.

Chennai moved up to nine points with their third win of the season and sit pretty on top. For defending champions Kolkata it has been a nightmare of a tournament as they have yet not been able to register a win in the tournament and have only two points.

ATK coach Teddy Sheringham accepted that things haven’t exactly gone according to plan. “We have not had the best of starts which isn’t good for the reigning champions. We had a few setbacks. But I believe we are not far away. We need to do better and I know that. But we are positive. There is always pressure and no one wants to be a bottom of the table even if these are early days.
