With little at stake on a wet afternoon in Moscow the game also seemed to be a dampener with both coaches giving game time to fringe players. Fortunately it was not to be so as both the teams played a high tempo of attacking football to dish out one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Portugal were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute after VAR confirmed that Andre Silva was fouled by Rafael Marquez in the penalty box. Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa who was fantastic throughout the match pulled out a brilliant save to ensure that the score remained at 0-0. Mexico were soon in front in the second half as defender Luis Neto put the ball in the back of his own net to hand Mexico the lead. Both sides were reduced to 10 men as Portugal defender Nelson Semedo and Mexico substitute Raul Jimenez were sent off for two bookable offences. The European champions were within seconds of losing in normal time but Pepe popped up at just the right time and in the right place to equalize in the dying minutes of the game.
Adrien Silva won the second penalty of the match for Portugal in the 104th minute of the match. Having missed their last 4 penalties in the tournament, tensions were high as Silva ran up to take the penalty. Silva calmly put the ball in the back of the net to give Portugal the lead and ensure that they sealed third place in the Confederations Cup with a fiery 2-1 win.
