Corona medicine latest news India – There are several companies working on coronavirus cure – Covid-19 was first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019. It has since affected nearly 21 million people worldwide and has killed over 7 lakh people as of August 2020.
Since then, the Food and Drug Administration has issued two emergency-use authorizations for COVID-19 treatments – Hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate in March 2020 and one for Gilead Sciences Inc’s remdesivir on May 1.

Patanjali
Patanjali recently launched a medicine in India called, ‘Divya Coronil tablet’. Although it hasn’t yet been confirmed to effectively help COVID-19 patients, the drug is set to have jointly been made by Patanjali Research Institute and National Institute of Medicine Science, Jaipur.

The CEO of Patanjali Ayurved, Balakrishna said the medicine has been molded into scientific formulas by reading scriptures and Vedas. He also mentioned that the tablet consists of Giloy, ashwagandha, basil, shwassari juice, and atomic oil.
The company claims that ashwagandha acts to keep the corona’s RBD away from the body’s ACE, causing the virus to stay out of a person’s body cells. Giloy prevents the spread of the virus while tulsi attacks the RNS of the virus, acting to prevent its growth.

It was reportedly said that the medicine is for coronavirus but, now it is being called an immunity booster. The Ministry of Health in India has banned the promotion of medicine until it is tested and approved by the Ministry itself. Thus, it cannot be called a medicine to cure coronavirus.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals
On 22 June, the company received DCGI approval to launch a new antiviral medicine called, Favipiravir, for treatment of patients with mild to moderate Covid-19 patients.
The company on 26 May announced to begin a new phase 3 clinical trial for patients of moderate Covid-19. This new randomized, open-label study aims to test the combined efficacy of two antiviral drugs, Favipiravir and Umifenovir, as a potential COVID-19 treatment strategy.

Hetero Labs got a nod to manufacture and sell ‘Remdesivir’. This allowed the use of the drug in ‘restricted emergency use’ only. It is also advised to be given to COVID-19 patients with moderated symptoms.

Sun Pharmaceutical got DCGI nod for the clinical trial of nafamostat mesylate on COVID-19 patients.
Biocon Biologics India
Biocon Biologics started conducting trials for the novel biologic, itolizumab, to treat cytokine storms, a leading cause of death among severe COVID-19 patients from June 1 onwards. The company also received DCGI approval for the emergency use of ‘CytoSorb’ to treat critical COVID-19 patients near 28th May.

Zydus Cadila
This Ahmadabad-based pharmaceutical has emerged as a big leader at the forefront of India’s battle to fight the COVID-19 virus. The company’s research team at Zydus Cadila is constantly working towards an accelerated vaccine research programme that can fight COVID-19. Zydus has adopted a two-pronged approach for the development of a vaccine. This includes a DNA based vaccine and a live attenuated recombinant vaccine to combat the virus. The company is also exploring the use of a biologic drug Interferon alfa-2b to treat the COVID-19 virus.
Serum Institute of India
The 50-year-old Pune-based vaccine giant, Serum Institute of India, is also one of the pharma companies in India that are finding its way to fight against the COVID-19 virus. On June 4, the British drugmaker AstraZeneca said that it has partnered with the Serum Institute of India to supply 1 billion doses of the University of Oxford’s potential COVID-19 vaccine.
The company has forged a partnership with AstraZeneca to produce the coronavirus vaccine. SII will be providing around 400 million doses of coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2020 as a part of the agreement. The company has also tied-up with Codagenix, an American biotech company, to develop a live attenuated vaccine.

Bharat Biotech International
Bharat Biotech International has collaborated with the Indian Council for Medical Research to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. With this collaboration, the ICMR will provide continuous support to BBIL for the development of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Indian Immunologicals is one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world. They have collaborated with Griffith University of Australia to develop a Coronavirus vaccine, using the latest codon De-optimization technology. According to a statement released by the company, the vaccine has the potential to provide long-lasting protection with just a single-dose administration. Moreover, the vaccine will come with an anticipated safety profile similar to other licensed vaccines used for active Immunisation.
Mynvax
Mynvax is a biotechnology startup involved in making next-generation flu vaccines in India. This startup is situated at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. It has also taken up the responsibility of beating the COVID-19 virus and is developing an indigenous vaccine to prevent COVID-19 infections.

Auro vaccines and Gennova Bio pharmaceuticals
Recently Auro Vaccines and Gennova Bio pharmaceuticals announced their entry into the COVID-19 vaccine development race. Both the companies have approached the Department of Biotechnology with their respective vaccine candidates and are looking forward to a quick response.
Vaccine candidate from Panacea Biotec
The yet-unnamed vaccine is being developed by Panacea Biotec which has set up a JV firm in Ireland with US-based Refana Inc for the same purpose. The company will manufacture over 500 million doses of the Covid-19 candidate vaccine. The company also said that over 40 million doses are expected to be available for delivery early next year.
