CWC 2019 New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 3rd Match Preview – While the one rides the storm, the other bites the dust. This saying fits aptly for the two in cognition in this match. New Zealand is a much improved and stable side under Kane Williamson while Sri Lanka has changed more than five captains in the last two years. Barring a series win against England last year, Sri Lanka does not have much to show when it comes to badges. New Zealand, on the other hand, would like to finish what they could not do in the previous final against Australia in ICC CWC 2015. Here we analyze as to what prospect they hold in their opening match.

The black caps saw disappointment during their last appearance in the world cup when they took on Australia. But when they take on the field against Sri Lanka Saturday, they would look to start from where they left in their last campaign. Before their bowlers were routed against a spirited West Indies batting, they did show some signs of resurgence against India by bundling them on a paltry 1979.

When it comes to the formation, New Zealand would look to the experienced Martin Guptill to have a repeat show what he did in the previous world cup outing when he had hit a double century. He will be duly assisted by Colin Munro who himself has shot into fame with his power hitting. The duo would be responsible for giving the side a solid start for their middle over stars to come and capitalize. Captain Williamson and Ross Taylor would be the biggest threat for the opposition as they can solidify the middle order while also providing impetus towards the back of the innings. Williamson would be the essential cog as he would look to bat throughout the inning while expecting others like CDG, Blundell, and Neesham to unleash some power hitting during the inning. Ross Taylor, for whom this world cup could be the last outing, would leave a mark on this world cup and finish as one of the greats of the New Zealand cricket. There has no update on the injury of Tom Latham and hence we could see the young Tom Blundell who hit a century against West Indies to make a debut against Sri Lanka.

The bowling under the able leadership of Trent Boult looks solid with ample support from Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, and Matt Henry. The Spin duo of Ish Sodhi and Santner would be keen to keep the good work they had been doing over the last two years. It would be interesting to see if the team decided to field both the spinner which would mean that they would either have to sit Ferguson or Matt Henry out.

Sri Lanka Team Preview

More than a lesson in cricket, the Sri Lankan side need the inspiration to look on and someone among the senior players like Malinga or Mathews must step up to show them that. Following the retirements of their greats, the Sri Lankan team have not been able to cope with the International competition and choose talents from the domestic circuit – the result being them replacing more than 5 captains in the past couple of years. That being said, Sri Lanka has appointed Karunaratne over Chandimal and Mathews to lead the pack.

A solid opener himself, it would be interesting to say how he infuses inspiration into a side which was once considered a threat to opposition with the likes of Jayasuriya, Vaas, Muralitharan, Sangakkara, and Jayawardene. The team would, however, look towards the captain to provide some solid starts in the tournament opener while his partner, a senior member himself; Lahiru Thirimanne must take responsibility at the top to take the innings forward. A lot will depend on how the openers take the game after which the likes of Angelo Mathews, Kusal Perera, and Kusal Mendis can use the firepower to take the team total to a respectable score. The lower order would have the firepower of Thisara Perera to provide the final impetus to the team total.

Given how the team has fared over the year, it would be hard to say that Sri Lanka would have the upper hand but the underdog tag to the team would inspire them to perform big given that they have nothing to lose. The bowling department would be spearheaded by Malinga himself who found touch in the recently concluded IPL while he would be duly supported by Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal and Jeffrey Vandersay. The Spin department would be handled by Dhananjaya de Silva and Jeevan Mendis.
