Earlier in the day Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first hoping to script what England did twice scoring more than 400 runs. The pitch at Trentbridge has often been taunted as a belter but nothing of that sort happened when wickets started to tumble one after another and helpless tail struggled to take the score past 100. It all started with a shaky start by Imam-ul Haq who was peppered by short deliveries outside off and on the body line, a strategy by West Indies which saw the back of eight Pakistani batsmen. Skipper Holder, who was the most expensive of the bowlers, coupled with  Oshane Thomas shared seven wickets between them while the superman Russel claimed two wickets upfront to make some inroads.

Having been peppered by some excellent display of short balling, Imam-ul-Haq could not stop himself to edge a short delivery on the off stump back to Shai Hope who had an excellent field day. Before the team could have recovered from some power hitting by Fakhar Zaman, the second jolt came in the form of Zaman who was bounced out as well. Haris Sohail too saw himself lobbing one on the bowling of Russel while Babar Azam tried to settle the tide. Before they knew, the Pakistani side was reeling at 45 for 3 after 10 overs. Babar Azam received a reprieve on 12 but could not get going edging one past to Hope who made sure that it was taken with all splendour on delivery from Oshane Thomas.

Hafeez tried to ease the tide with a flurry of boundaries but the wickets kept on tumbling on the other side with the next to go was the skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed. Shai Hope claimed that he caught Sarfaraz behind the stump off Holder but the call was substantiated by Pooran who stood next to Hope behind the stump. After being turned down by the ground umpire, Holder decided to refer which was upheld by the third umpire. In the same over, much talked about all-rounder Imad Wasim top-edged a delivery in route to Gayle who made no mistake with reverse cupping it.

All of Pakistan’s hopes were dependent on Hafeez who was watching the other batsmen getting out on the other side. He too learned nothing from this and threw his wicket by top-edging a short delivery from Oshane Thomas. Wahab Riaz took some hitting down the batting line up to take the score before crumbling at 105.

It was never going to be enough for a team which had hit 421 in their last warm-up match against a balling line up much superior to that of Pakistan’s and it happened exactly the same. Gayle set the ball rolling after having watched enough deliveries from Amir. Hasan Ali saw the other side of luck as two edges went past the keeper to four. Amir was however conscious on the other end blocking everything. Wahab Riaz showed some promise with a maiden first over but was bludgeoned in his second over for two sixes.

Mohammad Amir struck twice to give some cheers to the Pakistani fans who had gathered in large numbers to cheer for their team. Amir also proved why he was chosen over Junaid Khan which had triggered some controversies as well. But it was all Gayle’s show who hit the first fifty of the tournament for West Indies thereby also bringing his sixth consecutive half-centuries off 33 balls. Gayle departed as soon as he completed his fifty but Pooran ensured that no other wicket fell in route to their first victory in the world cup.

Brief scores: Pakistan 105 in 21.4 overs (Fakhar Zaman 22, Babar Azam 22; Oshane Thomas 4-27, Jason Holder 3-42) lost to West Indies 108/3 in 13.4 overs (Chris Gayle 50, Mohammed Amir 3-26) by seven wickets.
