Coming back to Deodhar Trophy India B Vs India A, India B prevailed over India A in the opening match of the revamped Deodhar Trophy at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Taking on a full-strength India A side that featured the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Ashwin and Prithvi Shaw, Shahbaz Nadeem and Markande produced match-winning efforts to guide India B to a 43 run win. A 4-48 for Markande and 3-23 for Nadeem ensured India B began India’s 50 over domestic tournament in perfect style.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first on a pleasant morning in Delhi, India B was given a dream start by Shreyas Iyer and Mayank Aggarwal. The pair put on a 50 run third wicket stand to provide the middle order with the perfect incentive to tee off from.
However, another quick wicket for Delhi and a tight spell by spinners Ashwin and Pandey saw them put the brakes on India B’s innings. Taking their time in the middle, the Vihari-Tiwary pair stitched together a partnership, giving India A’s wrist spinners the respect they needed. Grinding it out for a short period of time, both suffered plenty of nervous moments with the spinners extracting good purchase from the pitch.
Settling in slowly, both batsmen rotated the strike well, taking singles when the opportunity arose. Gradually seeing out the tough phase, both adjusted their game to accelerate with Tiwary bringing up his half-century off 57 balls. A perfect partnership was brought to an end though by a moment of madness between the two which aw Tiwary gift his wicket, getting run-out with the score at 202-5.
Faltering from a position from where 300 looked likely, India B could only manage 261 in the end, courtesy of an unbeaten 87 by Vihari.
Coming out to chase, India A were blown away in the opening stages. Poor shot selection and execution saw them slump to 80-5, limping towards an embarrassing defeat. Ashwin and Karthik tried their best to save their side the blushes, putting on an 87 run stand in 16.3 overs to keep their side afloat. Breaking a nagging stand, Markande dismissed Ashwin to end India A’s hopes, leaving Karthik’s humungous efforts of 99 in vain.
