Story behind Dhanteras
During churning of the Milky Sea, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean on the day of Dhantrayodashi. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Kubera, the God of Wealth, is worshipped on Dhanteras.
Like every festival, there are a few stories associated with Dhanteras. However, the story of the 16-year-old son of King Hima is the most popular legend connected to the festival. As per the horoscope, the son of King Hima was destined to die by a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. To save her husband from death, his newly wedded wife thought of a plan. She built a heap of gold ornaments and silver coins at the entrance of their bedroom. Innumerable lamps were lit in every corner of the room as also the Palace. As the death was destined to be in his sleep, she sang songs and narrated stories to keep the price awake. When Yamraj, the god of death, arrived disguised as a serpent, he could not see anything as his eyes got blinded by the bright lights all over and hence he couldn’t enter the room of prince. He hid in a corner and kept waiting for lights to go dim and the prince to sleep so that he could bite him. But, his plans remained unsuccessful and he had to return empty-handed from the palace. Since that day, Dhanteras also came to be known as the day of Yamadeepdaan. Even today, some people keep lamps burning through the night on Dhanteras.
