Diego Maradona death news – Legendary Argentinian footballer, Diego Maradona, passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 60. He is regarded as the greatest footballer of all time along with Brazilian legend Pele. As soon as the spokesperson for Maradona announced his death, a three day national mourning was announced by Argentina President Alberto Fernandez. Earlier in the month, Maradona underwent a brain surgery post which he was recovering.
The Argentine rose to fame during the decades of 70s and 80s because of his extraordinary footballing skills and later on managed to always be in the headlines due to controversies surrounding his failed drug tests and abusive nature.

His international career for Argentina comprised 91 caps in which he scored 34 goals. He captained his side 4 FIFA tournaments and led his country to win the World Cup in 1986 against West Germany in the finals and also won the Golden Ball award for being the best player of the tournament that year. He created history in that tournament, and created a legacy for himself especially after the quarterfinal game against England, in which he scored both goals in the 2-1 victory against them. The first of the two goals was due to an unpenalized handball, thereby known as “the Hand of God” while the second one, came as a result of a successful 60 meter dribble past 5 English players which was voted the “goal of the century” by FIFA.com in 2002.

Born on October 30, 1960, Maradona started playing professional football at the young age of 15. He debuted for Argentinos Juniors. He also represented Argentina in the Youth World Cup in 1979 held in Japan where his team won the World Cup after defeating the Soviet Union 3-1. His professional career started with him playing for Boca Juniors from where he moved to Barcelona. In 1985, he left Barcelona for Napoli where he led the club to win 2 Serie A titles, interestingly their only two titles till date.

After the golden decades of 1970s and 1980s, Maradona continued to be in the spotlight for rather infamous reasons. He was sent back in the 1994 World Cup held in the USA after failing a dope test and testing positive for ephedrine. He also left Napoli in the prior years after testing positive for cocaine.

However, despite the controversies surrounding his drug involvement and straightforward outright nature, Maradona continues to remain one of the greatest figures of world football and arguably the greatest footballer of all time.
