Dr Tessy Thomas was born in April 1963 in Alappuzha, Kerala. Her father is a small time businessman and mother a house wife. She did her B.tech from Thrissur Engineering College, Calicut and M.tech / Guided Missile from the Institute of Armament Technology, Pune (now Defense Institute of Advanced Technology). She did extremely well throughout her college life. Tessy Thomas married Saroj Kumar, a commander in Indian Navy. They have a son Tejas who is also an engineer.

Tessy Thomas was appointed by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in Agni Missile program when she finished her M-Tech from Defense Institute of Advance Technology, Pune and that is where she has been ever since. Within a few years of her joining the Agni team, Dr Tessy Thomas designed an advanced missile guiding system.

She was the brain behind designing for all the Agni series of Missiles. Agni Missile is the strongest and very powerful weapon of our defense system.

Dr Tessy Tomas was Associate Project Director of Agni-III missile (3000 km range). She was the Project Director for Agni IV and in 2011 DRDO successfully tested the same. In 2009, she was again appointed as Project Director for Agni 5 with a range of 5000kms. Agni 5 was also very successfully tested on April 19th, 2012. It has been her greatest achievement till date.

Dr. Tessy Tomas has not only offered extraordinary contribution in India’s missile program but she has also set a perfect example as a “woman making her mark in a traditionally male bastion and decisively breaking the glass ceiling”. She proved that there was/is no gender discrimination in technology.
