Having bowled out South Africa for a meagre 175 runs in the first innings, England declared their second innings at 313-8, giving South Africa an unlikely target of 492.Bairstow top scored with 63 runs while Maharaj was the pick of the South African bowlers with his 3 wickets.
Faced with the daunting task of chasing a record target, South Africa never looked in the chase. Opener Elgar starred with his magnificent 136 runs but was not provided any support by his compatriots who crumbled like a paper house caught in a tornado around him. No other South African batsman was able to reach the 50 run mark, as Moeen Ali’s wizardry caught them like a deer in headlights.
