The West Indian team shook off the blues of their humiliating defeat in the first test match as they bounced back strongly on day one of the second test match of the series. A wonderful bowling spell saw the West Indies dismiss England cheaply for just 258 in the second Investec test. They ended the day losing one opener, 239 runs still behind at Headingly.
Shannon Gabriel turned out to be just the spark needed, as he was brought back by the West Indians. He along with Roach wrecked havoc on the English batsmen as they brought England down to their knees at 71-4. Arriving at a fragile stage, Ben Stokes counter-attacked beautifully. He took the attack to the West Indian bowlers as he played fearlessly to help England reach a decent total. Dropped twice, Stokes made the most of the lifelines handed to him as he reached his 100 off just 122 balls. West Indies ended up dropping four catches and let go off their hold on the match after tea to hand England a hand back into the match. Stoked was eventually dismissed by Gabriel who along with Roach picked up four wickets as the duo ran through the English line-up to dismiss them for 258.
West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach: “We had a big meeting about discipline, we weren’t good enough in the first Test and we came out and were much better here.
England’s Ben Stokes: “We might be a little disappointed with 258 but we won’t know if it’s a good score until the end of the West Indies innings.
West Indies ended their first innings on 19-1 and will begin Day 2 trailing England by 239 runs.
