After KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant dug in deep to trouble England throughout the opening and middle sessions of the day, it was only a formality for England to wrap up the test match post their dismissals during the England Vs India Fifth Test Day 5.

Pant and Rahul

Pant and Rahul put on a partnership that looked to almost defy all probabilities and even looked to push India towards a win at one point on Day 5. However, the task was too huge for the duo that perished in the post-tea session of the day to expose the tail too far too many overs than they would have liked. Nicking off India’s lower order was a matter of overs for England’s pace battery that ended up dismissing India for 345 to give their side a huge 118 run win in the fifth and final test match of the test series between India and England.

England Vs India Test Series: Complete Wrap Up

The day started for India with Rahul and Rahane taking the guard with the score at 58-3. In a precarious situation with the team looking down at the barrel of defeat, England was expected to wrap up the test match early in the day. Rahane and Rahul had different plans though as they put on a century stand to frustrate England’s bowlers to no end. A 106 ball 37 by Rahane was just what India needed at the moment. Buckling down, India’s vice-captain played gritty and long innings as he soaked up the overs, exhausting England’s bowlers in the process.

The partnership was ultimately broken by Ali who ended up getting the better of Rahane. Vihari was quick to follow Rahane back after the first innings half-centurion was exposed to the harsh reality of test cricket. The debutant was unable to read one by Ben Stokes and ended up nicking it to Bairstow for a duck. With half the side back in the pavilion and England seizing command of the match once again, Pant walked in to change the course of the match.

With two of India’s most aggressive batsmen at the crease, they took the onus upon themselves to take the attack to the English. Playing their natural brand of cricket, the duo who had till now failed to impress finally stepped up for the country. Scoring at a run-rate of 4.5, the pair stepped out to hit England’s bowlers all over the place to leave England’s bowlers scratching their heads. Putting India in a strong position of 180 runs needed in 40 overs with 4 wickets in hand, the Pant-Rahul combination broke England’s back who started fearing that the match might be slipping away from them.

England Vs India Fifth Test Day 5 -In the course of their 200 run partnership, both the batsmen also brought by their hundreds. Rahul’s 149 and Pant’s 114 were the first time both of them had crossed the three-figure mark this series. Both innings mirrored each other with each batsman trying to outdo the other when it came to boundaries. Mapping the entire ground, the duo took on each and every bowler, irrespective of his reputation to smash him out of the ground.

With things looking rosy for once in the Southampton test for India, Adil Rashid happened. The spinner was introduced into the attack to bowl with the new ball and he ended up doing the trick for England. Looking to put one in the stands, Pant failed to connect properly and was caught in the outfield by Moeen Ali. Rashid followed up with Rahul’s wicket as he broke through his defenses to send both of India’s batsmen back to the hut and with it seal India’s fate in the match.
