Rohit Sharma and Kuldeep Yadav. These two names will give nightmares to the English cricketers for months to come. After having bedazzled in the T20 series, proving to be a thorn in England’s dreams of a victory, the duo were on fire once again in the first ODI of the three-match series. The duo took the entire burden of India’s win on their shoulders yesterday. While one caught the English batsmen in a web with his tricky spin bowling, the other sent the English bowling line-up to the rafters with his willow. A day that was dominated by the pair saw India seal a comfortable 8 wicket win at Trent Bridge to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
How long do England need to learn? After having been stumped time and time again by left arm chinaman in the T20 series, England just went and did it again on Thursday. Its baffling how a team cannot spot out the one clear weakness in their side that glares out brighter than the sun. England’s inability to play spin is nothing new, but their failure to work on it is one of the most surprising things in world cricket. Having handed Kuldeep Yadav his first five wicket haul in the T20 series, England went one step better to hand win a six-wicket haul in the first one day international in Nottingham.
Batting first, things were going all well and good for the English on a ground where they had posted 400+ totals in their previous two matches. The opening pair was piling on the runs in double quick time, making the most of the first 10 powerplay overs to reach 73. However the English script unfolded very much on the same lines once Kuldeep Yadav was introduced into the attack. Things went from bad to worse from them very soon with them being able to pot only a modest 268 on good batting conditions.
The defence of their total saw things go even further downhill for them. It was a stroll in the park for the Indian side courtesy of opener Rohit Sharma’s 137 and captain Kohli’s 75. The pair was devastating in their partnership that saw India march onto a comfortable win by 8 wickets.
In the England vs India First ODI Match Highlights, India captain, Virat Kohli, said it was a clinical performance from the team. Added that he still wants to experiment in the middle and give more confidence to the players coming in. Kept the cards about the Test team selection a surprise and said that both the spinners have made a good case for themselves and we still have time to select the team.
