England vs Ireland Test Match Highlights – England won the test match by 143 runs at Lords. They created history as they become the first team to taste a victory after been bowled out within the first session of the first day of a test match.

Ireland had England under their mat in the 1st innings but they couldn’t hold on the advantage. The visitors were bundled out for the 7th lowest test score in the test match history. They lasted only for 94 balls in their 2nd innings as Woakes and Board ran through the inexperienced batting line up of Ireland.

England’s 1st Innings – Batting

England won the toss and batted first in this one-off test at Lords. But the batting didn’t come good as the hosts expected it. England made some changes in their batting order. The new openers Jason Roy and Rory Burns didn’t start well for England. Roy’s maiden innings of a test ended in the 2nd over. He was out for just 5 runs. Joe Denly who was the at the number 3 spot, provided some stability but he couldn’t go a long way. Denly looked good for his 23 runs but England wanted much more from him. After Denly’s wicket, England lost the wickets in heap. Burns was out in the very next over. He scored just 6 runs. Then Ireland got the main scalp which dented the England innings.

Mark Adair dismissed the modern-day great batsman and England’s skipper Joe Root for just 2 runs. After that, England lost wickets at regular intervals. Johnny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Moen Ali were dismissed for golden ducks. England’s scorecard was 43 for the loss of 7 wickets. Sam Curran and Olly Stone were the other batters who scored in double digits but they also couldn’t do much.  Sam Curran was out for 18 runs while Olly Stone was dismissed for just 19 runs. England was bundled out for just 85 runs in 23.4 overs. This was a big warning bell for the England batsmen ahead of the Ashes test series.

It was a dream spell for Tim Murtagh. He is the first Irish cricketer to take a 5 wicket haul in a test match. He had impressive figures of 5 for 13 which is the most economical figure at Lords and against England in a test match. This was the cheapest five-wicket haul at the venue of Lords. With Murtagh, Mark Adair took 3 wickets and Boyd Rankin took 1 wicket to his name.

Ireland batted well in their 1st innings. They had a decent start of 32 runs but the Ireland Skippers fell early. Porterfield was the first one to go for 14 runs in the 12th over. James McCollum and Andrew Balbirnie batted for some time. After 6 overs, McCollom was dismissed for 19 runs. He was clean bowled by Sam Curran.

Andrew Balbirnie looked good in this innings. He shared another partnership with Paul Stirling which helped Ireland to go past the 100 run mark. Stirling and Balbirnie shared a stand of 87 runs. But this stand was broken by Stuart Board. He dismissed Paul Stirling for 36 runs. Still, Andrew Balbirnie batted and reached his fifty in this test match. Unfortunately, he couldn’t convert this start into a big score. Balbirnie was dismissed for well made 55 runs.

Ireland had a mini-collapse in the innings as Gary Wilson, Stuart Thompson and Mark Adair were out in quick succession. It was Kevin O’Brien who took Ireland to 200 run mark. He got some help from Andy McBrine and Tim Murtagh. But they couldn’t stay for long. McBrine was dismissed for just 11 runs and Murtagh out for 16 runs. Boyd Rankin too didn’t hang around with O’Brien as Rankin was the last man to be dismissed for 7 runs. That folded the Ireland innings for 207 runs with Kevin O’Brien not out on 28 runs.

A decent bowling performance from England. The hosts needed this because they had a very little score on the board. Stuart Board, Sam Curran, and Olly Stone picked up 3 wickets each to their name while Moen Ali picked up just 1 wicket.

England was trailed by 122 runs and they needed to bat well in the 2nd innings. Rory Burns was dismissed again. He scored just 6 runs. It was a handy knock played by Jason Roy and Jack Leach. They shared a stand of 145 runs which brought them back in this contest. Jason Roy scored his maiden Test half-century. They both put England in a good position. Jack Leach too batted for his 92 runs, unfortunately, Jack missed out on a well deserved century.

Roy and Leach’s partnership was the highest in the match and after this partnership, there were no more partnerships for England. Jason Roy was out for 72 runs and that opened the gate for Ireland. Joe Denly was out early for 10 runs and so was Johnny Bairstow who scored a pair of ducks in this match with Moen Ali again disappointed with his batting form. Ali was out for just 9 runs. It was a little knock played from skipper Joe Root, Sam Curran and Stuart Board which took England to 303 runs. Root scored 31 runs with Curran scored 37 runs while Board was unbeaten with 21 runs in the 2nd innings.

Ireland didn’t repeat the magic of the 1st innings. They allowed the hosts to get away and scored 303 runs. Tim Murtagh took just 1 wicket while Mark Adair and Stuart Thompson picked up 3 wickets each with Boyd Rankin taking 2 wickets.

No good batting show by Ireland in their 2nd innings. They shot just 38 runs in their 2nd innings. Only James McCollum reached the double digits. He was the top scorer for Ireland in the 2nd innings. He scored 11 runs. But the rest were bowled out in single digits scorers. This was a poor batting display that cost Ireland the match by 143 runs.

Only two bowlers were used by England to demolish the Ireland batting. Due to their brilliant bowling performances Stuart Board and Chris Woakes, England bundled out Ireland in just 15.4 overs which is the shortest time taken to dismiss an opponent in test cricket. Chris Woakes took his 3rd 5 wicket haul in his career.  His match figures were 6 for 17 in this match.

Stuart Board was also sensational. He was the perfect partner for Woakes. Board took 4 wickets and gave away just 19 runs in this innings. England won the match by 143 runs and they become the only team to win a test match by scoring the lowest total in the first innings. The man of the match award was given to Jack Leach for his knock of 92 runs.
