Supreme court today directed, that the National Anthem must be played in theatres before movie screenings. The court said everyone should stand when the anthem is played and the national flag should be shown on screen.

The judges said, “When the national anthem is played it is imperative for everyone to show honour and respect. It would instil a sense of committed patriotism and nationalism”.
A petition was earlier filed by Shyam Narayan Chouski, who runs an NGO in Bhopal saying alleging the misuse of the anthem in TV shows and movies. Acting on this petition court said, that anthem should not be commercially exploited or dramatised or printed on the objectionable material.
In 2003, Maharashtra ordered that the anthem must be played before the screening of any film.

This practice was usual and essential in the 1960s which gradually faded away as multiplexes changed the movie watching experience.
