The Manchester City midfielder set up Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld and netted the fourth himself. Steve Clarke’s Scotland must now look to next year’s playoffs as their best hope of ending a 22-year wait for an appearance at a major finals end with this game. Belgium after regaining possession from a Snodgrass free-kick scored the opening goal of the game with Dries Mertens peeling away and finding De Bruyne who was running free up the left. He had time and space and far too much excellence for the scrambling Scottish defense. De Bruyne looked up and picked out the former Manchester United striker Lukaku who strolled in on the goal all on his lonesome and finished the ball into the net quite easily. The whole buildup from Mertens to De Bruyne to Lukaku to the back of Dave Marshall’s net took only 14 seconds. This goal marked the 49th International goal for Romelu Lukaku.

Scotland was disorganized at the back and failed to pick him up. Charlie Mulgrew tried to head a De Bruyne corner away but the situation played out in a funny and perfect way for Toby Alderweireld as the defender’s header bounced in via the crossbar with the referee awarding the Belgian’s their third goal.
