Continuing their magnificent run this season, premier league heavyweights Chelsea won 1-0 against a tricky BATE Bairstow side to not only progress to the next round of the Europa League but also remain the only unbeaten side in Europe in the 2018-19 season. It was not all rosy for fellow premier league side Arsenal though who were held to a goalless draw by Sporting Lisbon at home.
Europa League 2018 matchday 4 was headlined by Chelsea who continued their winning spree to make it 17 unbeaten matches this campaign. Forgetting the definition of defeat, Chelsea has enjoyed a season as no one else has in Europe this year. Revolutionised by new manager Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea has become an unbeatable force, one to be reckoned with.
Their match against BATE Bairstow wasn’t one of their best this Europa League campaign though. Playing under extremely cold and foggy conditions, the London club put in a slow and sluggish performance in the first half, one that hardly befitted the form they have been in this season.
The second half saw them pick up the pace with Giroud putting them in the lead early into the half. A brilliant header by him was powerful and stinging, crashing into the back of the post to end a goal drought that had extended over 700 minutes of football. The goal was enough to see Chelsea win 1-0 and progress from the group stages of a European competition for the 8th out of 9 times.
Meanwhile, other premier league side Arsenal in the competition failed to score for the first time at home since their match against Manchester City in August. The result, along with a 1-0 win for Azerbaijani side Qarabag over Vorskla Poltava of Ukraine in the other Group E match, was enough to take the Gunners through to the round of 32 though.
The match was overshadowed by a horrific injury to Danny Welbeck who twisted his ankle in the first half. A severe injury, one of the kinds which are never a pretty sight to see on the field will see the striker out for an extended period.
In other notable results of the gameweek, Vidi moved to second in Group L with a 1-0 win over POAK. Spartak defeated Rangers in a 4-3 thriller to move second in Group G.
