Facts about Amitabh Bachchan- Fondly known as Shahenshah of Bollywood, Star of the Millennium or Big B, Amitabh Bachchan is truly one of the finest actors, the world has ever seen. Born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad to Harivansh Rai Bachchan, an eminent Awadhi-dialect poet, and Teji Bachchan, Amitabh was named as Inquilab when he was born. It was on the suggestion of the fellow-poet Sumitranandan Pant that his name was changed to Amitabh.

  • An alumnus of Sherwood College, Nainital, Amitabh went on to attend Kirori Mal College in Delhi University where he completed his graduation. His mother surely had an influence in his choice of career as she also had a keen interest in theatre and it was she who always wanted Amitabh to be an actor.
  • Dilip Kumar has had the biggest impact on Amitabh’s acting career. Big B has often said that he was awestruck by Kumar’s terrific performances movies like Ganga Jamuna and others.
  • Bachchan made his film debut in the year 1969 as a voice narrator in the movie Bhuvan Shome by Mrinal Sen and made his acting debut in Saat Hindustani.

  • One of his first commercially successful films was Anand in which he shared the screen with Rajesh Khanna. He won his first Filmfare award for “best supporting actor” for this movie.
  • His stardom began rising after 1973 and he gave numerous hits for a decade. Though there were some minor glitches in his career, each time, Amitabh returned much stronger.
  • He had suffered a near-fatal intestinal injury on the sets of Coolie in the year 1982 and it took him about 6 months to completely recover and return to the set of the movie.

  • Later that year, he was diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis because of which he took a break from movies for about five years.
  • Again, in 1988, he made a come-back with another hit – ShahenShah and worked for four more years before taking his second retirement.
  • He also started his production company, ABCL, but none of the movies that were produced under this banner worked out well and hence, it was shut down.

  • However, Bachchan didn’t lose his hope and continued working in the movie business.
  • He has received too many awards and appreciations owing to his contributions to the Indian cinema. The Government of India had honored him with the Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Padma Vibhushan in the year 2015.
  • The Government of France also honored him with its highest civilian honor, Knight of the Legion of Honour, in 2007 for his exceptional career in the world of cinema and beyond.
