facts about Girish Karnad – Girish Karnad, Veteran film actor, filmmaker and playwright who worked in South and Bollywood cinema industry passed away today morning in Bengaluru. Girish Karnad passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 81 due to prolonged illness. Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced a holiday on account of Girish Karnad’s demise.
Some facts about Veteran film actor, filmmaker, Girish Karnad
- Girish Raghunath Karnad was born in 1938 in Maharashtra. Girish Karnad’s initial schooling was in Marathi. Then he went to Karnataka, where he started attending theatre groups, Natak Mandalis.
- Karnad composed plays for four decades and later translated them into English.
- He made his acting as well as screenwriting debut in 1970 from a Kannada film, Samskara which was based on a novel by UR Ananthamurthy. The movie won the first President’s Golden Lotus Award for Kannada cinema.
- He was the recipient of Padma Shri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992. He had also won four Filmfare Awards. He has also received the highest award for contributions to Literature, Jnanpith Award in 1998.
- Karnad was also seen in TV series Malgudi Days which was based on RK Narayan’s book. He played the role of Swami’s father.

- Some of his very famous Kannada movies are Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Ondanondu Kaladalli, Cheluvi, Kaadu and Kanooru Heggaditi.
- Many of his Bollywood movies include Nishaant, Manthan, Swami, Pukar, Iqbal, Dor, 8 x 10 Tasveer and Aashayein.
- He was married to Saraswathy Ganapathy and the couple have two children.
- He provided the voice of late President APJ Abdul Kalam in the audiobook of Kalam’s autobiography ‘Wings of Fire’.
- He was also seen in Bollywood’s Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017, which was a sequel of Ek Tha Tiger.
- He was last seen in 2018 in a Kannada film, Neenillada Male.
