- Beginning his career at the Cricket Club in Delhi, Dhawan like so many players switched from the initial role he had taken to on the field. Initially a wicket-keeper, he gave up his duties behind the wickets to dedicate only the batting aspect of his game.
- At the young age of 12, Dhawan who failed to see results in his game considered leaving cricket before he was eventually asked to play on and keep improving on his skill set. It was a long journey for him to the Indian side, one that spanned a good amount of 10 years in which he kept playing at the domestic level.
- His first big tournament was the U10 Cricket World Cup where he went onto score 505 runs at an average of 84.16 with three hundreds in the 2003 edition of the tournament.

- His fist major role as an opener came in 2005 when he came out to face the new ball during the Challenger Trophy with MS Dhoni. The two had gone onto register a massive stand during their time in the middle which had seen a huge platform materialise for their side.
- For Delhi, in the Ranji Trophy he has a total of 461 runs in 6 matches. In total, he has 16 centuries and 24 half-centuries for Delhi in the domestic circuit across a hoard of tournaments.
- His first game for India came in the 2010 visit of the side to Australia when he was included in India’s test side where he scored 187.
