FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund – Borussia Dortmund fell short in the first half of the second consecutive matchday with FC Köln taking the lead in the 29th minute. The performance for the entirety of the first half was average at best. Köln prevented Dortmund from playing their natural style in the first half of the game by keeping the ball with themselves. The newly-promoted side pressed BVB hard and created a number of chances and went on to score the opening goal in the 29th minute.

The beginning of the second half was more of the same until Lucien Favre brought on Achraf Hakimi and Julian Brandt replacing Schulz and Weigl respectively. Brandt’s substitute was the trick that turned the game around. The Black and Yellows dominated the rest of the match and turned the game around late on, with Sancho, Hakimi, and Alcácer all chipping in to give Dortmund a 3-1 win.

Both the sides had equal chances in the opening stage of the game without really threatening the goal. It was Marco Reus’s free-kick from 25 yards which had to be turned around the post by Timo Horn, the goalkeeper for Koln and that is where it all changed. It was the promoted side that struck first on the half-hour mark when Ellyes Skhiri flicked on a corner and Dominick Drexler headed home at the far post for Cologne’s first goal at home in the Bundesliga. With BVB trailing, the cologne players continued to press and pressure the visitor’s defence and at one point caught goalkeeper Roman Bürki in possession, and taking a deserved lead into the break.

Paco had an early chance to bring Dortmund to the same level after the half time when he was spinning his marker inside the box before being denied by Horn, who made himself big from close range. Borussia finally found a way through the stubborn Cologne defence when Sancho picked up a short corner and launched the ball into the far corner on his weak foot to bring the league leaders at the same level. Substitute Hakimi then put Dortmund ahead when he headed a perfect cross from Lukasz Piszczek before Paco Alcacer sealed up the comeback, tapping home after Sancho had broken away on the counter. Dortmund now has two wins from two this season.
