Group C and Group D were in action at the FIFA World Cup on Thursday. Group C has started taking up its final shape after all four of its teams played out their matches yesterday, where France and Croatia qualify for the round of 16. A win for France courtesy of a Kylian Mbappé goal means that France will progress from the group irrespective of their last match’s result. A second defeat for Peru ended their world cup story while a draw between Australia and Denmark meant that either side can still go through to the round of 16. In group D, Argentina’s disastrous campaign continued after Croatia thumped them to leave their hopes hanging on a thread and ensure qualification for themselves in the progress
The day’s proceedings were commenced with Australia and Denmark facing each other. Denmark opened the scoring via Tottenham Hotspur star and their country’s best player Christian Eriksen. The mercurial Dane connected sweetly to net home a fine volley as early as the 7th minute. Australia who was in desperate need of a point saw VAR award them a penalty for the second match in a row. In one of the most contentious decisions taken by the video assistant referee this tournament, Australia were given a penalty after Peru were found controversially guilty of handling the ball in the penalty area. Mile Jedinak coolly slotted home his second penalty of the game to ensure that both the teams shared the points on the day and kept their hopes alive of progressing.
Peru V. France was an ultimate thriller. After France’s 19-year-old Kylian Mbappé put the European side into the lead, Peru sprung into action, knowing another defeat and it was all over for them this world cup. Attack after attack put France on the back foot in the entire second half. More possession and shots on target, however, failed to translate into a goal for Peru who bid adieu to the knockout stages and sit bottom of group C with 0 points.
The last and most anticipated clash of the day saw Messi lead Argentina schooled by Croatia. After being held to a shock draw by Iceland, Argentina knew anything less than a win would hamper their world cup chances severely. Leave alone getting the three points, Argentina couldn’t even manage one as Croatia scored three past them. A mistake by Argentine goal-keeper Caballero was pounced upon like a rabbit by Rebic to open the floodgates for Argentina. The best midfielder in the world Luka Modric scored a peach of a goal to double the lead for Croatia which was rounded off by a well-worked move which Rakitic got at the end off. The win saw Croatia confirm their qualification, leaving Argentina in a dire situation.
After France and Croatia qualify for the round of 16, let’s see who else joins them there.
